I think it was just that Farrell tends to sunburn much more easily, to the point that it was a health risk for her. Per Ron Moore's answer to a query about this in an AOL chat in 1997:

I suspect only prosthetics stuck on with glue might be an issue there, perhaps why she wasn't used to infiltrate Ty'Gokor in "Apocalypse Rising"

Oh, she also had problems with the heavy prosthetic make up as well. That is why she was not in Apocalypse Rising, despite being an expert on Klingons, as MacLeod rightly observes. I believe it was also partially the reason why the Trill look changed from TNG.

C'mon! Let our personal feelings aside here! Sure, Jadzia wins in a fight, but talking about characters, its obvious Ezri was away more complex and interesting!

I'm gonna be honest, i don't like "perfect characters" i like the ones that have flows and overcome them with strength and will power! Because those inspire me to do the same, grow "beyond my programming" and become "a better human being with each day", that's what Star Trek is all about after all!
There is no honor on a character that is strong, powerful, open, beautiful since the first appearance.

That's my opinion.

I always felt Ezri was wimpy compared to Jadzia. Never took to the character. I liked the self confidence Jadzia exuded. I always felt it would have been cool that Jadzia's succesor be a male, just to mess with Worfs head, lol.

I wouldn't have seen that as being a problem for one season, especially since there were enough supporting female cast. . .Penny Johnson Jerald, Salome Jens, Louise Fletcher, Rosalind Chao, Chase Masterson. Given the final season was one long war arc leading to Sisko ending up with the Prophets, there was little time for any of the female characters other than Kira.

Dax was always a superfluous character who was there as eye candy, to give Bashir some love interest, and to make up the female numbers. I've never quite understood why it was felt necessary to bring Nicole de Boer in for one season. The Ezri episodes were all pointless, forced, and had nothing to do with the final season arc, and she came across as a bit of wet rag.

Would have funny/cool. When first introduced, have the male character give a hard stare at Worf's crotch, and grin alot.

Except union rules on that sort of thing are extremely strict. The show wouldn't have been able to afford Jens's or Fletcher's full-time salaries, and there just wasn't enough for the others to do to meet the screen-time requirements.

Would they have to be full time though? When the overall effect is that there are still so many strong female characters in the supporting cast, one less on the 'regular' call sheet would be neither here nor there to the overall scheme of things.

On a show like TNG or VOY, where The Main Characters Do Everything, then yes the removal of a female cast member without replacing said cast member would be a major problem. But DS9 made good use of supporting actors. I think it could've absorbed the loss of Jadzia without having to bump anybody else up to main cast status.

I found this thread very informative, I always find it interesting when an actor or actress suddenly leaves a series to find out the behind the scenes reason. I thought DS9 handled this one well and it added a new dynamic to the final series which U.S. often invigorating, Worf joining did this in my view as did Jeri Ryan in Voyager.

The worst example of an exit was The West Wing where an actress is in the final episode of series 1 and in the final scene only to never appear again.
