I agree the cast has no idea of the mess they were being sucked into, they were used.... Wes, Bad Robot does want this movie as they are paid up front and make huge profits as they bill for CGI. FX everything..... and Orci did want to direct... it is simply not going the way they wanted and believe Paramount cannot risk investing in ST3 as has ~tank~ written all over it... when the games stop suspect it will be noise they made so BR cannot say they did not act in earnest and they simply will have timed out the clock. Orci says he could not even read in English the notes they wanted him to do they were sending as they were unintelligible so he quit. This whole thing is now a fiasco.

He explained he stepped down and will produce, but he could just not be a part of making a low quality product. Well, if you believe those two, it's the second coming of Trek. These guys either are fanboys or creators of this Axanar thing. (More likely the later.) It seems to me like they're just trying to stir up some publicity for it by raising some controversy elsewhere with nothing real to back it up. But, I've been wrong before.

Also perhaps worth noting is that Star Trek films (up to and including the 2009 movie) have historically performed much better domestically than in the international market, taking in the neighborhood of two-thirds of the box-office gross at home, versus one-third overseas - an inversion of the typical formula for Hollywood blockbusters. It's stated in the article that it's harder to turn a profit outside the U.S.:

Because overseas distributors take much higher percentages of the gross, every dollar made domestically is worth more than a dollar made overseas.

Could it be that the push by Paramount to discard what worked well for the first movie in favor of marketing STID more aggressively to the international market is where the real problem lies, rather than the production budget or anything else over which Abrams and Bad Robot had any control?

Not really, because if they can't make movies on this "tentpole" level work for them internationally then the movies aren't really worth continuing to do. Star Trek used to be a kind of mid-level product, where they could put a reasonable budget into it and expect a reasonable return. Now they're mega-budget movies and all the considerations are different.
