The WB/DC Cinematic Universe Thread

To be honest, while perhaps Suicide Squad won't be "Will Smith and some other people" I can see them putting a bit more of the focus on Deadshot than on the rest of the team, similar to how they handled it in Batman: Assault on Arkham.

Yeah, that's fair enough. I mean, in most movies of this kind, one or two characters do get a bit more screentime than the rest. And Smith is undoubtedly the biggest name and draw in this cast, so...

Any team that includes the Joker is definitely living up to the name "Suicide Squad"....

He won't necessarily be on the team. I wouldn't be surprised if he were the villain that the Squad was sent up against. After all, the way to make villains sympathetic is to pit them against an even worse villain, and the Joker is the worst there is.

I haven't read the comics, but from what I've read about them, I had the impression that Deadshot has usually been the central character, or at least the heart of the ensemble.

Anyway, I'm pleased to hear that their candidates for Waller are rumored to include Oprah Winfrey and Viola Davis (whom I've thought of as a good candidate for Waller). They aren't anywhere near the character's original girth, but at least they aren't thinking in terms of the young, supermodel-skinny Waller of The New 52 and Arrow.

^ Deadshot usually is the central character. Flagg is their leader, since he works for the government that employs the squad but he is just as expendable as the villains on the team.

Here's a good one shot minisode featuring Batman vs Deadshot.

I am wondering if Leto is playing Joker in more movies than Suicide Squad? BvS cameo, JL & maybe a Batman movie?

The other three actors I'm unfamiliar with, but hopefully they'll each be a good fit for their role.
Margot Robbie is most famous for playing Leonardo DiCaprio's wife in The Wolf of Wall Street. I can vouch that she's hilarious in that.

Cara Delevingne is one of the major contemporary supermodels. She's filmed a couple of roles recently, though none yet released.

Jai Courtney is, well, I think he's a block of wood, but many people insist he was good on Starz's Spartacus.

He was likable as Varro and maybe okay in Die Hard. Haven't seen him in anything else though.

Its unfortunate that Waller is thin on Arrow, but the actress playing her is great.

Hm. I find her rather bland myself.

That's rather kind. She's awful, I think.

Waller is "thin" in the new 52 because she was a super-agent.

I am a little surprised by the Suicide Squad casting as it seems to be the "old" squad. This means that the cinematic universe is going to try to forge its own territory which will probably be a mash up of various universes.

More likely that they made her a super-agent because they wanted an excuse for her to be thin and sexy. They're getting a little better lately, but at the start, the New 52 was all about pandering to the male gaze.

Not surprising to me at all, since that's the way it's usually done. I've rarely seen a screen adaptation of a comic that wasn't a mashup of elements from different eras. And audience response to the New 52 has been mixed. Some have speculated that DC's upcoming Convergence event, bringing back all their past universes, is meant to undo the continuity changes of the New 52 -- or at least to provide some ongoing alternatives to that universe.

I agree with the last statement...I need a term that mixes Zero Hour with Flashpoint.

Zero Point! Flashero? Flash Hour? Hour Point? Pointour?

Because when one has trouble with a reboot the thing to do is to go back to the thing who's LOWERING SALES motivated the reboot in the first place.

Well, whatever was wrong with the thing who's lowering sales motivated the reboot, the reboot did not solve the problem. Might consider other causes.

Besides, ongoing alternatives sound good to me. Marvel has at least two ongoing comic book universes in monthly magazines, why shouldn't DC be able to do the same?

DC used to run several universes at the same time, but it lead to the first Crisis storyline.

When your editorial section leaves your one three year old universe a complicated mess then your screwed.

I don't know if Marvel still do it but their books used to have a "previously on..." section at the beginning of all their comics a few years ago. As Stan Lee said, for every comic there is always a first time reader and you have to invite them into the story. Doing that and maintaining some kind of coherence in the overall universe would be a good starting point.
