Interestingly, I only recently discovered that when first created, they weren't in costumes at all. So this would be adhering to their origins in a way. ;)

All I can say is, in the interest of realism I hope their costumes don't have a four on them. Or that they have code names. Or that the Thing has rocky skin. Or that Mr Fantastic can stretch. That's just ridiculous. Actually, they shouldn't have any powers at all. They should just be bedridden and dying of radiation poisoning.

I feel obligated to point out that the X-Men movies changed a ton of things from the comics, but several of them are still considered classics. Being different doesn't make an adaptation bad; adaptation means change, so doing things differently is the entire point.

That said, so far nothing I've heard about this movie has given me reason to be encouraged. It might be a brilliant reinvention for all I know, but if so, there's no evidence of that yet.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about this but they are making that very hard. I don't mind some changes when stuff is adapted, but I still want the source material to at least be recognizable in the adatation and I'm really starting to wonder if that will still be the case here. I'm actually kind of shocked to see them making so many drastic changes when most adaptations these days seem to be getting closer to the source material. At this point it's almost starting to feel like they are purposefully trying to piss off the comic book fans.

Apart from who's playing who, we know nothing whatsoever about this movie really. So I don't see any reason to either get excited or think it will be crap

I remember them saying at first they were gonna do, then a few months ago they changed it to maybe not.
The reason being if the FF live in a world full of mutants with amazing powers then what makes them so 'fantastic'?

And, of course, that page also serves as a handy list of the extensive times they actually use the character's codename/hero name. I'd also submit that there's a difference between using a character's actual name and changing that character's name. Calling a character by their actual name shows familiarity, which makes sense when people actually know who they are (the X-Men Universe is where they have to walk a very difficult tightrope since it never really made as much sense to give them codenames). However, this is not like calling The Hulk Bruce Banner, it's calling him David Banner. Granted, that show was a success, but it was also a different time where they were more afraid of these things.

If they wanted to call him Dr. Von Doom or Victor, that would be different.

"You'll never get away with this, Doctor Doom!!"
"It's von Doom! Doctor von Doom! Why will no one call me this?"
    "It's clobbering time, Doom!"
    "von Doom! von Doom!"

Part of the reason we know so little aout this film is the complete lack of stills or clips. That, in itself, is a very bad sign.

I no longer know what to believe about this film.
This news has to be intentional misinformation, surely.

I find it hard to believe they think this makes for a good adaptation if true.

    Just call it:
    Chronicle 2: The Fantastics

This farce of it being a recognizable adaptation of the source material is getting laughable, again, if true.

That would amuse me. Obviously, the way the character is in the comics is for his egomania to go in the other direction and embrace cartoon supervillainy, but I have no problem with the opposite. Hell, make him Victor Von Döm (with an umlaut). All he really wants is people to say his name correctly (a plight I sympathize with in my life).

"Von Doom" sounds ridiculous. "Domashev" sounds credible and badass. Facts. :p

The whole of the Fantastic Four are ridiculous because Jack Kirby embraced the ridiculous. If you're afraid to embrace it, maybe it's the wrong source material to do a film adaptation of?

Superhero movies require absurd science, cartoon physics, and improbably good-looking heroes pretty much by definition. They don't, however, require preposterous given names for their characters even before the superhero stuff even happens.

As it happens, Doom is a real English surname, from a word meaning a hill or slope, and apparently a Dutch one too, either as a variant of Adam or from "de oom," meaning "the uncle." I found references to a Dutch Van Doom surname as well, but they might be typos for Van Doorn.

So it's entirely possible that "Von Doom" could be a Latverian surname. There's nothing intrinsically preposterous about it.

This is starting to sound like an ashcan copy film made just to keep the license.

There's no posted budget, but they picked a found footage director whose last film had a $12 million budget.

There's no-one remotely famous in the movie.

"The film was shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana." *coughs* massive tax breaks *coughs*

"The film is using OTOY for the visual effects. According to Josh Trank, with the use of cloud-rendering technology from OTOY, they can create visual effects at a much lower cost.[29] The film will also be converted to 3D in post-production.[30]"

That's needlessly dismissive of Josh Trank. Chronicle was a low-budget movie, but it was a very powerful, creative, and original take on the superhero premise. Admittedly I didn't like it as much on my second viewing as I did on the first, but there was some really impressive stuff there, and it showed that you don't need a bloated budget to make a visually or conceptually striking film.

I'm not convinced that Trank is a good fit for the Fantastic Four, mind you, but he should not be dismissed as some cheap hack.

As an aside, where did Victor get his PhD? If I recall correctly, he was expelled from college when his experiment went ka-bloom.

I didn't enjoy it while I was watching it the first time.
I found it to be overrated. Having him as the director was a first sign for me this was an on the fence film and has only gone off the cliff from there.
