The Legend of Korra: Book 4

Does anyone else think Bumi was the reincarnation of his namesake?

I don't see that much similarity between the two Bumis, really. The elder Bumi was a "mad genius," eccentric and erratic but extremely wise. Aang's son Bumi is a fun-loving guy, but in a different way, not nearly as weird and more fallible. If anything, the younger Bumi reminds me much more of Sokka, his uncle.

Really enjoyed this episode. The stuff with the kids was a lot of fun, and of course Toph was great. I really liked the fact that Korra's cure was just as much mental as physical.

4x05: "Enemy at the Gates"

• I actually found myself totally on Kuvira's side. I don't think I've ever been fully onboard like this before. It must be frustrating to watch your nation in such disarray and wanting to do something while your superiors want to do little or nothing.

• A lot of tension between Opal and Bolin. They were a nice couple. I hope they can patch things up.

• The Iron Monger suits were neat but Bolin's bending proved to be more powerful. I don't think that modern/high tech could necessarily supplant bending or render it obsolete.

• I wonder if Zhu Li (I keep hearing 'Julie') is just pretending to turn on Varrick so that she can hatch a plan or something.

• I rewatched a few episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender this week... "The Avatar State", "Avatar Day" and "The Avatar and the Fire Lord". Kyoshi went through the same thing that Korra has to deal with. The Earth Kingdom was out of control then too. And what Kuvira is doing is different from what Sozin was doing with the Fire Nation. Sozin was more about Manifest Destiny while Kuvira is trying to restore dignity to a nation.

• When I watch Agents of SHIELD, I can't help but think that Chloe Bennet would make a good Korra. She may not have the size but she has the voice, personality and overall demeanor to play the part.

I love Zhu Li.

The Kuvira story isn't grabbing me the way last year's story did. We're definitely building to something, and I'm sure I won't be disappointed, but right now it's just not grabbing me the way I want it to. We need Korra to get back into Avatar mode.

Are you even on the side of "re-education" camps, slave labor, superweapon research, and conquering those who don't join voluntarily? Kuvira's motives may be good, but so were Amon's (to a point), Unalaq's, and Zaheer's. She's the latest in a line of people who were motivated by reasonable goals to commit obscene and brutal acts. The question is whether Korra can help her see how completely she's lost her way and become the problem rather than the solution.

I suspect the same thing. Zhu Li has hidden depths. On the other hand, she has perfectly good reasons for wanting to turn on Varrick.

Looking in as a viewer, I see that she's gone too far but at the same time I can still see and understand her fervor and why she feels the way she does. The episode did a pretty good job of presenting her side of things and putting me in her shoes.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out she was the brains, with Varrick being the idea guy. If that's the case, if she hadn't turned Varrick would probably end up being executed (I assume that'll mean she'll be helping him in the next episode).

Yeah, that was great. I agree with you guys about Zhu Li though, she's up to something. It does make sense that she would turn on Varik, but I don't really see it happening.
I really enjoyed this one.
It was great seeing Korra finally brought into the main Kuvira storyline.
I'm glad that Bolin realized how bad Kuvira is.

At the rate things are progressing this series, I suspect Kuvira may end up being something of a bait-and-switch. Not sure what it's going to be, but I think there's a twist coming.

Small side note: anyone else notice that the spirit vine super-weapon had the same look and sound effect as Vaatu's energy beams?

Yeah. I couldn't decide whether or not Suyin had the moral ground to just leave the rest of the Earth Kingdom to decay alone.

It is nice that Kuvira is not a mustache twirling supervillain and started out on a noble path and is trying to bring out peace the wrong way. I like the way she comes off extremely competent and intelligent.

Zhu Li is clearly going undercover to sabotage the spirit weapon.

My only disappointment is the Korra/Kuvira fight was delayed again

Agreed. I've loving the moral complexity of this season. I just hope that they don't have Kuvira pass a moral event horizon and turn into a cliche evil villain obsessed only with power.

Oh I don't know, I'd say she crossed that line when I heard the words "re-education camp." :/

Why does it sound like Ju Lee?

The word Zhu in Chinese is pronounced more or less as Ju. Its not completely the same pronunciation of course, but quite similar. So either Zhu or Ju works equally well.
I've found that English speakers tend to confuse the English "j" and "zh" sounds in their minds a lot. But since this is a U.S.-produced series, I would go with "zhoo lee" despite the actual transliterated Chinese use of "zh".
