Pondwater suggested we do this here, and I am quite prone to suggestions when they come from her, so here we have the pet thread. Show pics if you have them, and tell us a bit about them. Also, what did you name them? How did you decide on a name? All pets, alive in the past or the present are welcome. Pets alive in the future will need to be shown next to a hoverboard, and future copy of USA Today.
I shall begin:
This is Dallie. She was my black lab mix. She lived from February 14th, 1995 to November 10th, 2010.
We named her Dallie because we didn't want her to get too confused about her name. See, she was a stray, and her previous owners had beaten and abused her as a pup. They had, for some odd reason, named her Dallas. Well, she wound up with us, and we were both all the better for it!
She was the best friend a guy could ever hope to have. She once saved my life, and I saved hers, and we were joined at the hip in just about every way possible. For years I used to joke I had two shadows, my regular one, and a furry one that stood about 2 1/2 feet tall, that also ate floor bacon. Unfortunately, just a few months shy of the ripe old age of 16, I had to have her put down. She was suffering from a malignant tumor that had burst open, as well as other cancers, pancreatitis, and osteoporosis. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. I doubt there will ever be another like her for me.
We also had a couple of hamsters, though I don't have any pictures of them at present. I may have to dig around and find some pics, and scan them in.
Anyway, we had four hamsters in our lifetime:
The first was "Uncle Charlie," who gave us our first taste of tragedy less than 3 months later.
The second hamster we owned was "Uncle Oscar." He was a messy, cantankerous sort, who loved to bite, and had made no less than two dozen escape attempts in his lifetime, so you can see why we would name him after Oscar Madison (the Odd Couple). He developed cancer at the age of 2, and we thought he was going to die, so we took him back to the local pet shop to have him put down (they had a vet on staff). Much to our surprise, the vet told us that Uncle Oscar was in fact a girl (this may explain his, er, her cantankerousness. I mean, wouldn't you be annoyed if someone called you a boy and you were a girl?). Still, he said, the cancer could be treated, but we didn't have the money. He offered to keep her and take care of her, and we could visit her anytime we wanted. We did, and "Uncle" Oscar ended up living to be more than 3 1/2 years old.
The third was "Pockets". I loved that hamster so much. She never bit me, and never tried to escape, as far as I recall. She only lived to be a year old.
The fourth was Queeks. We named her Queeks because whenever she would talk, she would make this grunty little squeak, and it was so adorable. She sounded like she was always mumbling under her breath about something. She lived to be about 2.
After her, my heart couldn't take it anymore, so no more hamsters. Fortunately, we had just found this adorable, black lab mix who was only six months old, and looking for a home.
So, your turn!
