The Super Awesome Pet Thread

Pondwater suggested we do this here, and I am quite prone to suggestions when they come from her, so here we have the pet thread. Show pics if you have them, and tell us a bit about them. Also, what did you name them? How did you decide on a name? All pets, alive in the past or the present are welcome. Pets alive in the future will need to be shown next to a hoverboard, and future copy of USA Today.

I shall begin:

This is Dallie. She was my black lab mix. She lived from February 14th, 1995 to November 10th, 2010.

We named her Dallie because we didn't want her to get too confused about her name. See, she was a stray, and her previous owners had beaten and abused her as a pup. They had, for some odd reason, named her Dallas. Well, she wound up with us, and we were both all the better for it!

She was the best friend a guy could ever hope to have. She once saved my life, and I saved hers, and we were joined at the hip in just about every way possible. For years I used to joke I had two shadows, my regular one, and a furry one that stood about 2 1/2 feet tall, that also ate floor bacon. Unfortunately, just a few months shy of the ripe old age of 16, I had to have her put down. She was suffering from a malignant tumor that had burst open, as well as other cancers, pancreatitis, and osteoporosis. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. I doubt there will ever be another like her for me.

We also had a couple of hamsters, though I don't have any pictures of them at present. I may have to dig around and find some pics, and scan them in.

Anyway, we had four hamsters in our lifetime:

The first was "Uncle Charlie," who gave us our first taste of tragedy less than 3 months later.

The second hamster we owned was "Uncle Oscar." He was a messy, cantankerous sort, who loved to bite, and had made no less than two dozen escape attempts in his lifetime, so you can see why we would name him after Oscar Madison (the Odd Couple). He developed cancer at the age of 2, and we thought he was going to die, so we took him back to the local pet shop to have him put down (they had a vet on staff). Much to our surprise, the vet told us that Uncle Oscar was in fact a girl (this may explain his, er, her cantankerousness. I mean, wouldn't you be annoyed if someone called you a boy and you were a girl?). Still, he said, the cancer could be treated, but we didn't have the money. He offered to keep her and take care of her, and we could visit her anytime we wanted. We did, and "Uncle" Oscar ended up living to be more than 3 1/2 years old.

The third was "Pockets". I loved that hamster so much. She never bit me, and never tried to escape, as far as I recall. She only lived to be a year old.

The fourth was Queeks. We named her Queeks because whenever she would talk, she would make this grunty little squeak, and it was so adorable. She sounded like she was always mumbling under her breath about something. She lived to be about 2.

After her, my heart couldn't take it anymore, so no more hamsters. Fortunately, we had just found this adorable, black lab mix who was only six months old, and looking for a home.

So, your turn!

I love pets but have none that live with me at the moment. Pet fees, crazy work schedules...anyhoo, my folks have a cat and dog. They are my pets by proxy.

Smokey, we had him since he was a few weeks old. He was just this wild little puft of grey fur that went "mew, mew, mew". I got to name him, that makes him more special. I named him after a stray we had that hung around the porch. We named her Smokey. She was the sweetest cat but disappeared one weekend while we were away. So, two years later my folks brought Smokey II home. Now, he's a big clingy puff of grey fur.

Honeybunn is the dog. That's not his actual name but I call him honeybun because when he used to sleep curled up. He looked like a honeybun out the snack machines at work. Although, he looks more like a Swiss roll. I like honeybunn better.

The best good friend of pet I ever had was a cat named Lucky. He passed away of feline cancer back in 2008. My folks named him for the Grocery store of the shopping center that also had a pet shop. That cat was very lucky and surpassed the cliché of having nine lives. He was the kind that would climb into your lap and put his paw on top your hand to comfort you when things were bad. He was just a really good calm cat.

We've had a few dozen other pets too: cats, dogs, fish, an eel, a mouse, hamsters, a bunny rabbit....

We have a pet snake and a pet tarantula.

I was going to post a picture of the spider, but I've been told J won't return if I do...

Our current pet menagerie consists of two dogs, two cats and two guinea pigs. We've had several cats (all rescues), dogs (some rescues) and also pet rats over the years. Here are our current dogs, Marley the Golden Retriever and Max the Shetland Sheepdog. Marley is 7 and used to be as wild and uncontrollable as the Marley Lab of book and film fame. He's always been sweet as anything and gentle with the kids but he's big for his breed and would take advantage of it. He's now settled down and is actually quite lazy. Max is 1 1/2 and we got him to be a companion for Marley. The size difference is amusing, especially when they play-fight, and they adore each other.

Edit: forgot to say, J, that I always love seeing photos of Dallie. She looked like such a sweetheart.

D'aww. I love cats that are furballs, they crack me up. My cousin had a cat named Chia, and she was this giant ball of fur. Sometimes you'd be sitting on the couch, and as she would zip on by, it would look like a tumbleweed rolling by your feet.

That's a sweet story about your cat Lucky. I've never believed the notion that cats don't care. I've seen too many that care all too much for their owners.

I've got a bunch of cats.
I love cats! I've always liked them, but as I've grown older, my fondness for them has increased. Not sure why, but I'd gladly own a cat or a dog. Nice thing about most cats is they can generally take care of themselves while the owner is at work.

A pet's a pet, and while I would have shivering night terrors from seeing your pictures, post them if you like. All I ask, and you don't have to, is if you would put the pictures of the tarantula in spoiler code? I don't mean to inconvenience you or anything, but it would help me feel more confident about entering my own thread. Still, post those pictures. You have every right to be proud of your pets!

She was, she really was. She never behaved poorly toward anyone, except for truly evil people, which that only happened twice. She attacked nothing but the occasional sandwich or piece of pepperoni that got away from me.

She was an exceptional mooch, too. I've told the story about the time she ate the ham and cheese right out from between the two pieces of bread on my plate, leaving them undisturbed. She had so much personality, and was the best friend a guy could have ever had, and I still miss her so much that sometimes it still hurts, but she's not in pain anymore, and I still get to have all of these great memories of her, and that eases things.

That said, I think seeing the picture there of Marley with your son just makes me crack up, because the words "if I fits, I sits!" just pops up in my head every time.

You have the sweetest dogs. :luvlove:
Oh, and I agree, rescues make some of the best pets. :adore:

Love the tags on this thread...

Thanks, I wondered if anybody noticed.

Your legs go numb if Marley stays draped across your lap for too long. He weighs 38kg so is no lightweight, and his legs are very bony. He feels left out as Max and our cats fit so nicely on our laps and can be carried around, so we suffer for love. ;)

No problem!

She is Chilean Rose-Haired Tarantula. The third one we have had.

Love it! They're just big furry babies. :D

Dallie topped out at 40 lbs (18kg), but she was just as determined to sit in your lap, too, and she wouldn't ease up, she'd stage dive right in.

Were you bleeding soon after that photo was taken? ;)

Digits, it's not often I say this, but that's a beautiful spider!

I have two guinea pigs, Jezabelle and Kellie. Jezabelle is Kellie's mother. Kellie will be one year old Nov. 1. I got them from a local guinea pig rescue.

I have two gerbils. Red

Sassy

Cool! I'm always interested in all sorts of creatures people make their family members. I don't think I had many opportunities to see many spiders :)

Well, when you have kids, AND you're allergic to dogs and cats, you have to get creative.

:techman:

I'll have to see if we have any good pictures of the snake when I get home
