Gone Girl - Movie Discussion

Starring Ben Affleck, Rosamunde Pike
Directed by David Fincher
Rated R
2 hours, 25 minutes

I saw this gripping and suspenseful mystery drama based on Gillian Flynn's novel and thought it was pretty good. It's one of Ben Affleck's better roles in a movie, where he plays Nick Dunne, a small-town bar owner who becomes the suspect in the disappearance (and possibly the murder) of his wife Amy.

The film has been positively received by critics. It paints the picture of a seemingly happy married suburban couple, whose union is marred by infidelity, lies, mistrust, and resentment, all the while keeping up appearances. It's a social commentary on America's media circus and the court of public opinion involving a case of domestic dispute.

A-

My favorite character in the film is the cat - which I am convinced is somehow responsible for the whole thing.

An utterly f***ed up movie. Well written, well acted, beautifully shot but utterly f***ed up.

Both leads are hateful people. A half hour in you're hoping she's dead and he gets the chair for it.

Still worth the ticket price. Mind-boggling ending.

I never found Ben Affleck's character to be a bad person. A lot of people online have been saying that he is. He had a lapse in judgement that I won't mention and was pushed to his limits but beyond that he wasn't a fundamentally bad guy.

I liked the movie too. It had some good stuff about owning your mistakes and it was very gripping but the ending went into some weird territory. Still, I'd recommend it. Rosamund Pike was fantastic. Everyone was but she stood out for me in a way she never has before.

Just saw the movie last night and it's fantastic.

I was caught, hook, like, and sinker as the two leads tell the story from their perspectives, just to find out that in the end Kosh was right; understanding is a three edged sword: his side, her side, and the truth.

I was so caught up in how the characters presented their relationship in the first half of the movie, specifically Emy's version, that I hadn't realized till after walking out of the theater that there were major things I missed.

Definatley a movie which will benefit from a second viewing.

I'd read a review that kinda spoiled some things for me. Not a lot but I didn't go in completely fresh. It was interesting. I don't know that I liked it but it was interesting. I really liked the sister but that's mostly because she looks like Amy Acker. And the idiot neighbor with the triplets was played by Casey Wilson, who I really enjoyed during her brief stint on Saturday Night Live a few years ago.

Short review: What a mindfuck!

As I was watching the film I could only notice that if that many people, lights, and sirens were in our front yard our cat would have been under the bed hiding.

The sister was very good, much of that I think came from the fact that she was presented as a normal person.

I know the neighbour from Happy Endings, which was a pretty good show.

Saw this today.

You know, sometimes I can get kinda bummed that I've been single for a while... but now I feel pretty good about it ;)

^Agreed. Especially since I realized that I like smart women. So any woman that would meet my marrying standards would, theoretically, have to be smart enough to be able to do this if she wanted to.

Yeah, I had the same feeling during the first bit of the movie, when she is painting the picture of a perfect marriage.

but now I feel pretty good about it ;)

I still dunno. Single versus raising a child with a murderous psychopath... its a toss up.

Awesome movie, and probably my favorite of the year. Affleck was the best he's ever been, and the story just drew me in more and more as it went along. And while I was expecting there to be some big twists, I certainly wasn't expecting the kinds of twists we got.

I also wasn't expecting how surprisingly funny the movie became towards the end. Especially when it came to some of Affleck's reactions to all the crazy stuff that was happening.

Definitely a very cool movie.

I know what you mean. It practically turns into a black comedy at a certain point (which I will refrain from elaborating on). My girlfriend and I were laughing out loud--and not in a derisive way.

^ I kept laughing every time that picture of Affleck's character smiling next to the big Missing sign came on screen. I don't know I just found it funny. A human moment- someone takes a picture of you- you smile, he doesn't really think about the consequences, its the kinda dumb thing I'd do.
