Galactica 1980

Netflix does have the 3-part pilot on DVD, just not on streaming. They seem to have a number of series that are incomplete on streaming for some reason.

Just wow.

I just finished rewatching the original Battlestar Galactica and really enjoyed the series. So I figured I'd go ahead and watch the seven episodes of Galactica 1980. :scream:

Just frustratingly bad, bad, bad. I'm on the second episode and am simply ready to jump to "The Return of Starbuck" and be done with this pitiful affair.

And I have to watch this shit for work - which means I can't skip any of it!

It's coming out on Blu-ray next month in the UK, along with the original '78 series. Unfortunately there's no way to buy just the original series...

Ya know, even though "The Return of Starbuck" is definitely the best episode of the series, it still isn't much to write home about. It's like an island in a sea of suck, but the island is barren and uninhabitable.

Yeah, it's nice to see Benedict as Starbuck again but had this one aired during the original series, it wouldn't necessarily be viewed as one of its highlights.

Actually I think "The Return of Starbuck" is one of the better episodes of the original Galactica franchise. It's certainly the best, most complex portrayal of the Cylons in the entire Larson era.

As others have said jump straight to "The Return of Starbuck" it's the best episode of G80 and one of the both BSG and G80's better episodes.

It was also interesting how they mixed in some of the "dry" track of Gary Owens' voice to give the Cylon's speech more expression.

Which brings up this interesting documentary:

Galactica:1980 brought three Colonial technology changes that I liked:

1-Time travel ability of the Colonial Viper that should have been used beyond the pilot episode to explore Earth's history.

2-Invisiblity for both the Colonial Viper and the individual Colonial Warrior person too.

3-Colonial Viper now having two seats.:techman:

Oh crap. The UK gets the whole of TOS on Blu-Ray, but we only get the crappy theatrical re-edit of the pilot? FUCK! :brickwall:

As for G1980: Meh. It shouldn't be a surprise that it ended up the way it did. I'm sure the actual showrunners didn't want to water it down like that - the network bean-counters must have made them do it. And any series with Boomer as the Colonel can't be all bad!

Agreed on "The Return of Starbuck", BTW. If I remember right, it's Dirk Benedict's favorite episode he ever made. I find myself hoping that the follow-up ("The Wheel of Fire") had also gotten done. Now that would have been epic.

The two-seat adaptation is the only one of those that seems worthwhile to me. Time travel was too much of a gimmick, and invisibility would've taken the suspense out of the series by making it too easy to hide from the Cylons.

Anyway, the problem with all of G80's tech enhancements is that they were all the single-handed creations of that horrible Doctor Zee character, this know-it-all demon child who held absolute authority over the fleet and had reduced Adama to his spineless lackey. At least "The Return of Starbuck" explained why he was so super-gifted, although it didn't make the character any better in retrospect.

Yes, the two-seat Viper was the best change.

I loathed Doctor Zee too. I believe having a teen in this role was the attempt to appeal to earlier 7pm EST Sunday night time slot children viewers. It was a bad idea along with the "super scouts". :brickwall:

Can't we just say the whole G80 was a bad idea, or if I was being kind badli conceived and badly implemented.

There is a great deal about the show I enjoy... by remembering it. The actual experience of watching the show is effing terrible.

It's been out in Germany for almost a year. They have a 10 disc set, including one DVD full of extras. Apparently the UK release is just 9 discs, missing out on those extras, even if they have burnt in German subs.

But if the UK is getting it, surely the US can't be far behind. That German release was on a boutique label Koch Media GmbH and I believe locked to Region B.

Search amazon.de for it...

The UK release will be from Universal and they tend not to lock their discs, creating one master for all territories. I'm waiting for the US release, as I'm sure it will have more in the way of extras.

Damn, did I ever get in the wrong line of work...
