New or Old Klingons?

No that's true! I don't think they looked exactly like the later Klingons though either as they all had the same ridge rather than the veined turtle! I didn't mean to say that Berman, Braga and Moore had created the conquistador Klingons, Geoff, what I meant was that these three guys tended to ignore TOS because it wasn't worked on by any of them!
JB
Moore was a big TOS fan. If TOS was ignored it was because Roddenberry wanted it that way. Still, bits of TOS crept in and we had episodes that featured Spock, Sarek and Scotty, On DS9 they did a side story (sidequel?) to The Trouble With Tribbles and brought back Kor, Koloth and Kang. Enterprise played with TOS concepts as well.

Once the new look was established in the films it would be highly unlikely they would turn back the clock to revert to the original look.

That said one of the few things I liked in TUC was having smooth look and new look Klingons existing side by side. Christopher Plummer also balked at having to wear too much Klingon make-up. It would have been nice if TNG and the rest had continued that idea that there were simply more than one race of Klingon. To that end we wouldn't have had to have Kor, Kang and Koloth so made up in DS9. It was just way overdone.

I absolutely HATED the stupid ENT explanation that tied the smooth look to some Earth scientist. They should have just left it alone. This fannish practice that everything had to be explained in minutae and everything has to be tied together can really be annoying.

Regardless, I prefer any of those uniforms to the Abramsverse Trenchcoat Mafia & spartan helmet look. That is just plain stupid.

Why is it stupid? You put it out there, so I think you should explain. They were obviously in a climate that required some type of protection from the elements, as we also see Khan wearing a black trench coat and a hood.
Because it looks retarded. It's not any more complicated than that, nor does it need to be.

Classy. Per usual.

Candidly, no it doesn't need to be. If you think something is stupid it really doesn't need to be explained in great detail.

I see this a lot from the "critics" of the new movies, downright condescending tones and refusal to explain their overly agressive reactions to them.

It's often repeated that the TMP Klingons were supposed to be what the Klingons were always supposed to be like, but I question the veracity of that claim. It sounds like something GR made up just to handwave away the difference in appearance.

I agree with this. But it also brings to mind again the question I've always had, which is why it became an apparent "essential" that the Kilingons be in every movie? Their presence in the series, while memorable, was not an ongoing essential element. It would be like making an Andy Griffith/Mayberry series of movies, and having the Darlings appear in every single one.

Or every Mayberry film would end with some hillbilly shouting "You ain't heard the last of Ernest T. Bass!" In Mayberry XIII, Gomer Pyle says "Shazam!" for the godzillionth time and finally turns into Captain Marvel. Then he stupidly says "Shazam!" again in surprise at the change, and turns back into Gomer.

Are you sure about that? I don't recall the TNG Vulcans having them added. Selar didn't have them, and neither did Sakkath. Even "Ambassador T'Pel" didn't have them. (I tried to see if she had them after the reveal, but the screenshot is too small for me to tell.)

You may be thinking of Tallera, but I'm pretty sure she only had them because she was pretending to be Romulan.

But yeah, I agree that they should have kept the Vulcan and Romulan makeups the same, IMHO.
Agreed. Abrams's crew was stupid to change the Romulan and Klingon makeup. Couldn't they have at least shown all styles next to each other?
This reminds me of one of McCoy's line from TMP.

"They've probably redesigned the whole sickbay, too. I know engineers. They love to change things."

That is also the way it is with movie directors (especially a hot shot director intent on remaking the original) and makeup and costume directors too. They want to implement their vision of how characters should look and behave. If it means changing things from how they were in past movies or series -- which is almost always the case -- then changes are made.

Viewers shouldn't be surprised when this happens.

Some fans may like the change, some may not. In any case, it just reminded me of that line that McCoy delivered in TMP.

Every film changed the Klingon make up. The Abrams take isn't all that removed from any of the film versions. The Romulan make up isn't much of a change at all.

I'm still unclear why people think the Abrams versions are such radical departures? They are definitely close enough to be recognizably Klingon and Romulan.
