Resemblances with Into Darkness?

Inactive-Shapeshifter

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I was watching DS9 episodes Homefront and Paradise lost and just begin noticing something interesting... The plot actually resemble the one from Into Darkness! :wtf: I mean, we got the bad admiral, the "militarization" of starfleet, and even the "advanced secret ship" battle thing (in this case the Lakota, that had advanced weapons and shielding, vs the Defiant).

I'm not trying to say the movie was good/bad because of that, it was just something i noticed. :)

Anyone else noticed that?

You know, I certainly thought of Deep Space Nine when I watched the story unravel on the movie screen. I think it's kinda telling that a 90s television series with television budget manages to tell the story more compellingly than a 2010s big budget movie.

Reduced down to basics, STID and Homefront/Paradise Lost look similar. However, STID only uses those ideas--common stuff of conspiracy theorists--to give a reason for presenting action sequences. DS9 went into the actual issues at a time when they were not on the forefront of popular consciousness. We never get impassioned speeches like what Joe Sisko gave, or the complex input of Odo. STID is bad admiral manipulating events without any further consideration.

+1 :bolian:

It's a comparison I didn't make in the cinema (I was too busy groaning with despair at the time), but looking back at it I see the resemblance. But if you're going to steal stuff, you might as well steal good stuff (TWOK and DS9).

They are pretty common themes. The overpowered ship is just coincidence I think. nuTrek to date, has only been able to raise the stakes by way of introducing an unbeatable foe.

STID is more of a collection of themes and tropes that
1.We see in most militarized/police state stories.
2. Things the public is conscience about in our modern world.

When DS9 did it, these things were in the realm of fiction for Americans. In the post 9/11 and post War of Terrorism world of today; where words like
Terrorism
Suicide bombings
Drone strikes
Militarized police state/police force response. Most recently in Ferguson MI and the Occupy Protests.
Homeland attack
Have all become household words. The images of such are on the news (local, and cable) everyday.

STID was trying be invoke those feelings from it's audience. Look at Captain America The Winter Solider as anoher example. You have rampant expansion of the military, the 3 hellicarriers were intended to be preempt threats from afar (drone strikes), the security council sanctioning this increase in the name preventing homeland attacks, and the evil head SHIELD/HYDRA guy Pierce abusing his powers (or using it) to make his ideal world a reality.

One could argue that The Undiscovered Country also picks up similar themes.

There is an argument to be made for similarities, especially episodes like "Homefront."

I think ID took a more focused approach on the issue of response to attacks and threat of war, as well as the conspiracy theories that underlie a power's ability to make war.

Personally, I like the way it took on drone strikes, and preemptive strikes to end a war before it begins. While it may have been told before, it felt very relevant to me. DS9 dealt in broad strokes while ID took a specific aspect of that idea.

I think DS9 had a more martial law aspect of how military powers try to control in war time.

These things were not fiction when DS9 did it. It's extremely naive to believe these issues have only become relevant post 9/11. It might not have been on muricans radar, but they were very real issues for the rest of the world.

I'm also amazed that Homefront/PL basically predicted concerns of post-9/11 governance in the US...years before the 9/11 attacks even happened!

Didn't Babylon 5 cover those themes before Deep Space Nine?

Only slightly; B5 had the attack on a president as excuse for starting a dictatorship (9/11), and the establishment of Nightwatch (DHS) but it didn't talk about drones, IIRC. Of course, I could be wrong, in which case, please correct me.

Are you guys insinuating that no other show/movie has ever touched on the topic of drone attacks?

I'm not, not in the slightest.

However, ID did something that Trek was always known for-taking on a contemporary issue and putting it out, full view, for people who may not be aware of a 13 hour filibuster by a US Senator demanding the President of the United States provide a yes or no answer regarding executing US citizens without a trial.

So, not it isn't that a show has never touched on drone attacks, any more than a show had never touched on terrorism before 9/11 or Oklahoma City bombing, or other such events. However, things like Homefront or ID become more relevant, in my opinion, because such topics are in the public's mind.

But, that's just my take. I personally like that ID took such a take on drone strikes, and found in both relevant and entertaining.

I find it sad that Deep Space Nine could have anything to do with that plot-holed train wreck. DS9 was like Shakespeare compared to STID.

And I'm a Voyager fan!

Agreed, STID was a supreme disappointment even when compared to the extremely exciting 09 film. For the first time in my life, I don't care about the next one.. I'll see it when it opens for sure, but I'm more excited about Stat Wars.

Never thought I'd say that.
