I've been enjoying the final season so far.
The time jump makes sense to me. Yes, it's sad that Rothstein is absent from the show but, at least, the consequences of some of his previous actions are coming into play plot-wise with what's going on with Margaret. His violent death also stands out as a fate Nucky wants to avoid by making himself more legitimate.
The young Nucky flashbacks provide some compelling insight into the character and his family. And I'm curious to see what Chalky is going to do next after doing away with his inmate partner. I also doubt Gillian is to going to remain on the sidelines for long. I have this feeling that she will play some role in Nucky's eventual downfall which would be fitting since what happened to Gillian years ago is one of Nucky's early sins.

If the flashbacks are so important, they should have interspersed them throughout the seasons, right from the beginning. Right now, they feel more like an afterthought. Add the time jump, and it's rather jarring. I think it would have been more effective to use some of those flashbacks when some of these characters, like the Commodore for instance, were still around.
I think the flashbacks, unlike the ones used during the final season of True Blood, are going to build up to something significant in the present-day storyline.
I don't doubt they will. I just question the timing of them. Could have been more effective had they done them from the start and in parallel to some of the events and characters that have happened. The way they're doing it now just seems like a cheap shot.
Anyway, tonight's episode was my favourite of this season so far. Lots going on. Also seeing Margaret drunk was hilarious. Was nice to see her loosen up a bit.
I really loved tonight's episode. Young Nucky's dinner with the sheriff's family was genuinely moving.
Finally some shit with Van Alden. It's about time!!
But - but there are only four shows left? They better start wrapping this up. I feel like it's going somewhere else... does anyone suppose they will spin this off?

I was floored by the chemistry between MacDonald and Buchemi. Those two both on screen together are fantastic - I know it's always been there but they've (the characters) been estranged for a couple seasons now at least.

Wonderful episode. I've always loved the interactions between Nucky and Margaret, but this episode reminded me just how much I missed the chemistry between Steve Buschemi and Kelly MacDonald. It's been sorely missed and I hope we'll see more of it before the show ends.
It's been a long time coming, but now Van Alden's past is finally catching up to him. His response to Luciano's accusations in the face of Capone's gun was fantastic.
The moment I saw the Empire State Building statue, I knew Capone was going to beat the shit out of someone with it, although for the briefest of moments, I thought it was going to be Van Alden himself.

Dunno, but I don't think we've ever seen her do it on screen before. Either way, she played it very naturally. Wonder if maybe they had given her some for the scene.
Yeah, and in some ways, I think it was better for it. It was sort of like a bottle being uncorked. That performance was brilliant. I loved how she playfully wondered about the entertainment. More of this, please! This was the first episode this season where I can honestly say I felt like everything was meshing together. Shame it had to take so long to get there, though, given the short season.

Agreed. The 1897 Nucky was an uncanny resemblence, right down to his maneurisms. They did a great job casting him.
Heh, and about the teeth, I felt like that could have been a feature as he got older due to dentures, rather than having it at the outset as a young person.

Agreed on the inspired casting for young Nucky. Hopefully we'll be sticking with him for the remainder of the flashbacks (or will reach a point for a cameo from Michael Pitt?).
Great episode that focuses on family of nearly all of the major characters and how their lives have changed over the course of the show. An just when we thought Eli's life couldn't sick any deeper...

Well two of my favorites offed in one ep cant say that makes me happy. The flashbacks as I thought prove to really bring nothing to the plate but subtract from screentime of the better stories. Al is awesome and a series about the rise of the crime syndicate would be on my watch list. Two eps left and I will miss the show.
Well, I've really warmed up to the flashbacks. The problem is that the show is feeling really scattered now, and there's little to no momentum in what is being presented. Between the flashbacks and the rest of the show, it feels like two different shows. At least we now see young Gillian, but I felt the way it was done was rather disappointing. When we saw Nucky staring out at the hotel, there was a girl there that the Colonel was waving inside that I thought would be her, given what we know of him.
But it is nearing the end of the show, and it was awesome to see the old Van Alden again just for a few seconds.
Yes. He achieved his own personal redemption at the end. In those last moments, at least in his own mind, he was Federal Agent Nelson Van Alden once again, casting off his own past evil and bringing the wrath of God down upon the forces of lawlessness.
Even though this was just two episodes after nearly dying because of Luciano, this was an excellent moment for the reasons you described. And as soon as Nelson died, I figured the same would happen to poor Chalky. Two of the best characters are gone, but I'm surprised considering we're so close to the end.Yes. Contrary to historical record (he died in 1968), I feel like they're setting up for Nucky to die, too. I'm not sure how else this show will end his story.
Lastly, I'll be amazed if Mickey remains the last man standing when this is all over. How is he even still alive?
