"Fleet detonation" is no less plausible than flying the Enterprise underwater.

When I first read that I was honestly expecting that we would see Starbase One blown up, and have ships crashing all over Starfleet as a result. Including the one being featured in the trailers at the time. Amazing how wayyyy off certain assumptions can be from limited media.

The original idea was for Khan to use the uber-prefix code to activate the self-destruct sequence on all nearby Starfleet vessels. But then, the writers decided that obviously ripping off The Wrath of Khan would be a slap in the face to fans who expected something new.
