Hair's to you!

By the way, Shatner's chest hair is clearly visible in Where No Man Has Gone Before. Guess he got into manscaping after that mission.

I dunno, a hairpiece and a wig worn for part of a season should only count for a half each... :D
I read somewhere that Grace Lee Whitney's fruit basket was made of two wigs sewn together. Maybe she should count twice?

Wonder why Gene Roddenberry hated chest hair on his actors?
JB
It was probably the network standards more than Roddenberry. It was pretty common to see hairless chests in film and television up through the 60s.

Didn't Spock have chest hair during the whipping scene in "Patterns of Force"? Maybe Shatner's chest hair was too light to photograph well, or prominent around the nipples or something, and therefore shaved. I don't think he showed chest hair in the "Alexander the Great" pilot he did in 1964 either.

Technically, Shatner has never admitted wearing a rug, though even William Campbell said Shatner was bald when he went motorcycle riding with him during the series.

Supposedly, Sean Connery wore a chest hairpiece as James Bond, because someone didn't think his natural chest hair looked virile enough or something.

I am trying desperately to come up with a "codpiece' joke, but I got nothin'

I guess WNMHGB was never meant to be seen on a 60 inch screen. Back then, who knew? Shatner's hair is/was dark. Not only is Gary Lockwood's chest hair on display but his hairy underarms as well. I've heard test audiences were put off by Jeffrey Hunter's underarm hair which was seen as he was on the cross in King of Kings that the scenes were refilmed with Hunter's underarms shaved, so Jesus was smooth.

Its just the women and officially one of the men for half a season.
Wouldn't that be the same for TNG?
I'm thinking DS9 and ENT wigs are probably used less or just using better less detectable wigs.

How many of the original crew were wearing wigs?

Shatner, Koenig, Nichols, Barrett, and Whitney make five.

And Nichols is on the record stating that she only wore the wig about 50% of the time.

I think I read somewhere that he felt that chest hair on men wouldn't be wildly popular in the future.

Yeah, I remember reading that somewhere too. Gene had some really weird visions about 23rd Century aesthetics (see also: zippers). Although I guess the manscaping trend might be confirming his vision?

Here is a link to a video on Youtube of "Kevin Pollak's Chat Show" where Kevin talks to Stephen Collins about an incident regarding the Hair & Make-up Person asking Bill Shatner if he/she should take Bill's hairpiece home and wash it after the the first day of shooting of ST:TMP and Bill was in total denial about the hairpiece. Bill was acting like he did not know what the Hair & Make-up Person was talking about. Move the cursor to the 00:16:00 point to see Kevin and Stephen talk about it.

Shatner obviously wore a wig during the films! His hair was too thick to be real and even though you can see it seperate under the water in The Voyage Home (a good wig all the same) it's still a wig! In the series it was less obvious and it's only because of this manic attitude about the guy being bald that you can see the join and the combing of his hair with the wigs!

I've never thought he wore a rug. You don't know what the hell you're talking about. :scream:
