Any love for Porthos?

I thought a dog on the ship was a stupid idea from the beginning and kept hoping for an episode where the Klingons eat Porthos.

But they would eat him alive, is that really what you want?

To be known to fandom as a person who wants a cute puppy eaten ALIVE?!

Dogs were in space before man. Besides Porthos was smarter than Archer.

Porthos: Arf! Arf!

T'Pol: What's that boy? The captain's stuck in a Jefferies tube?

^ lol!

I actually thought it would have made more sense to take a cat. Cats have a long fine tradition of sea-faring as they help control vermin. A starship would probably undergo occ radiation treatments for unwelcome microorganism and vermin, but a cat seems like a better fit for a ship.

^ A cat can go missing for a days, whereas a dog is easier to find, and wants to be around people anyway.

(That said, I do personally prefer cats.)

I'm not sure I'd like that -mine follows me from room to room. The dog follows him because someday he is going to catch that wascally cat! It irks my husband he doesn't have his own entourage to follow him around the house, too. It is a little odd, as the dog definitely most prefers my husb. My travels about the house often end in food; maybe not so odd!

^ Well, Scooby Snacks were copyrighted.

Archer: Will you bite the Klingon on the leg for a Scooby Snack ... er, I mean cheese?

T'Pol: Jinkies.

Trip: Zoinks Cap'n! Porthos, where are you?

Xindi: We would have destroyed the Earth if it hadn't been for those meddling kids and their dog!

I don't see how anyone could dislike Porthos. :) He was great, a nice indicator of Archer's very strong humanity. I could've done without all the toilet humor though. :p :D

Yeah, I agree with some of the comments: Porthos was more fleshed out than Travis Mayweather. (It was pretty sad how that character - Mayweather - was handled).

I came across a ship called the U.S.S. Porthos while playing Star Trek Online...lol

Just wanna kiss that lil puppy face!

nice picture.:)

Much love as Porthos shared number 3 spot with Spot on my list in the thread for favorite ST characters.

I heard Porthos would have been assimilated by the Borg if there had been a season five.

Porthos had his own episode without Archer like Mayweather?

Most beagles I have been around bark like crazy although I like the breed - heck I'm a dog lover - not a breed I wouldn't like.

Porthos was cool.
Coincidentally, my then-13 year old brother got a beagle when this show was still airing because the movie "Cats and Dogs" had come out a while back and he wanted one (my brother the original thinker named the dog Lou after the one in the movie :rommie: )

But owning one made me realize that beagles are one of the last breeds that would do well in an enclosed ship. At least most Naval vessals have some areas that can be walked for fresh air at sea, but a space vessal? Naw. And as mentioned they are loud when on a scent. Mine would make that baying noise whenever he came across a bullfrog he cornered.

My fave pic of the guy that I've used as an avatar off and on for the last nine years:

Yes, my former in-laws had a beagle and he was a noisy little guy who was an outdoor dog since they lived in rural country. It seemed an odd choice for starship mascot. Though a yappy little Pomeranian might have been worse.
