10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About the Original Star Trek

It's curious that Shatner never watches himself... I mean, sure his explanation makes sense and explains why he originally was in theatre. It's the same reason why I like to sing but hate hearing myself sing back in a recording. We're our own worst critics.

Yet, you'd think you'd want to at least go back and see the things you worked on over the years and also see exactly why people love what you did.

3. Spock originally didn't eat or drink
Not only would he have been red-faced, but Spock also wasn't originally planned to eat or drink anything — instead, he had a plate in the middle of his stomach, and he fed off any energy that struck this special plate.
That was part of a very early preliminary concept for the alien Science Officer -- even before G.R. chose the name Spock for the character, IIRC. Apparently Gene didn't know the difference between an alien and an android.

To be sure, the network was also worried that it was "too smart," a female first officer was going too far, and Mr. Spock looked too demonic.
The "NBC suits objected to the female First Officer" thing has been well debunked by now. What they objected to was the producer casting his girlfriend -- a relatively unknown actress with limited experience -- in what would have been a regular major role in a weekly series.

"The show was so broke, it reused tons of outdoor sets from The Andy Griffith Show, particularly in the episodes 'Miri' and 'City on the Edge of Forever.'"

Come on. Do they not get the concept of a studio backlot?

I did spot Floyd's Barber Shop in that episode- it was a drop your coke and say WTF?? moment.
Aside from the surprise it makes sense- why not use existing studio backlots...

Whenever I see a list titled "Things You Probably Didn't Know About Star Trek," I know it is NOT aimed at me. Or most of us here. :)

Number Five is not really canonical, although the existence of the ship's bowling alley is established in "The Naked Time".

Read/heard all this before. I find #4 questionably phrased. As I recall, Paramount offered Roddenberry the rights after the show was cancelled. It was not "losing money" since it was no longer in production. I'll have to go look at the cited interview again.

There have been quite a few actors who feel the same as William Shatner; and don't watch their finished work on TV/Film. It's not all that unusual.

I take it for granted that Shatner saw himself in Final Frontier, he was the one putting it together.

:)

I totally get where he's coming from. I act and I absolutely cannot stand to watch my own work. I'm too self conscious and far too critical. I love the process and the craft, but I have no interest in seeing myself in the finished products. I just complete each one and move on to the next.

He also saw of The Undiscovered Country in the dailies- he demanded that ILM digitally reduce the size of his butt when you see him from below during climbing to escape scene

CGI technology was just perfecting morphing at that point. CGI was still not quite there. Could they actually digitally shrink a man's ass convincingly? I read that, in the publicity shots, Jimmy Doohan had his neck airbrushed so it looked less fat, but photo editing is easier and commonplace. I will say "nah" to Shatner's ass maipulation since a) his weight is mostly in his belly (which wasn't digitally altered) and b) it's kinda stoopit.

About the #8: Perhaps it's a false idea I took when I watched Galaxy Quest as a kid, but I suppose it's pretty common with actors. If I were Harry Shearer, I'm not sure I would watch the Simpsons.

I keep seeing this claim but what's the source?
I never heard that assertion before, and I assumed it was meant as a joke.
