Favorite Starship from the Franchise?

I always found those bolt-ons hideous. Ruins the original design.

Yeah. For me that seemed like a cheap and quick way to throw together the appearance of an upgraded galaxy class. Otherwise forgettable (for me anyway).

I guess the one that gives me the most "thrill up the leg" is the movie refit Enterprise and the A. I always got giddy about Yeaterday's Enterprise and the C as well. And I remember getting excited about Voyager as well. The ship, that is.

I'm glad the Oberth-class Grissom gets some recognition. It often places in my top ten, just not this time for whatever reason. Let's say this time it's my #11. ;)

Joel, I would have to say one of the reasons I loved the Miranda class was because I thought: That would make a cool Romulan ship. :)

Another reason, I liked its weapons emplacements. :)

Romulan allies adapting Federation designs (or vice-versa) in future stories isn't out of the realm of possibilities. ;)

I can see the the refits maybe having the scales of a bird worked in somehow...

The NCC 1701-D, the ship I grew up watching on TV. It's not quite as elegant-looking as the original Enterprise, but it looks glittering and grand anyway, as a Galaxy-class vessel should. Also, that the saucer could separate was a neat (if sadly underused) feature, and made for a great crash scene in "Generations". :)

I can see looking at Enterprise D as too 80's, but ugly? Nah. The more modern designs are worse. The saucer section isn't even separated anymore. That was the distinctive thing about the Enterprise!
Worst of all is Excelsior though. I've always thought it was ugly.

NCC-1701 (TOS) first

NCC-1701-C (Probert variation, TNG conference lounge wall display) second

And last but not least, NCC-1701 (TMP)

I've never been a fan of the Original Enterprise, it just looks too spindly and seems to fly around nose down arse up for some reason.

I'll take the Enterprise E any day. Maybe with the Defiant as its shuttlecraft (Tough little ship, looks like it'll fit inside the Enterprise-E's shuttlebay ;) )

Well I also think the way the original ship dominates polls like this is very much a received opinion, you're expected to hold TOS above the rest of the series if you're to be accepted around here.
Rose tinted glasses, and all that.

It's that kind of thinking that blinds people to the great work done by the later series (as is the "special effects is for fanboys-I only care about the stories" dren) and especially the later visual effects designers.

I've always loved the original 1701 (been watching TOS since 1975). The fact that we're still talking about it fifty years later proves Matt Jefferies was on to something with the design. I think many of the later versions look "over-designed" and lost some of the simple magic of the original.

YMMV .

Over designed?
Or using modern techniques to refine what was designed using the basic techniques of the past to make something more modern and superior?

I find them over-designed compared to the original. Especially the Enterprise-E. It's just a personal preference.

Not everything works for everyone. But I think it's disingenuous to think that people all choose the original because they're expected to. Especially on this board where Deep Space Nine regularly wins 'Best Series' polls.
