Well, that's not the plan. They've been clear their plan is recast not reboot. I think there's a gap before a new Iron Man movie to make a recast more acceptable, but I have no doubt that's the plan.

Although I suspect Iron Man's success has as much to do with the actor as the character, so a recast is about as productive as introducing a new Marvel character instead.

The low position it often tends to find itself in - sometimes right at the bottom - when people are asked to "rank" the MCU movies, for example.

You would agree that's not a random sample or necessarily a representative sample, right?

In the comics, apart from Rhodey a few times, wasn't Tony briefly replaced by a teen version of himself prior to the whole Onslaught/Heroes Reborn mess? Probably not a good idea, but just throwing that out there.

Yeah, he was. And it was so bad that in-universe they had someone comment on how bad it was (Franklin Richards?).

I think it, and most of the events from the "Crossing" crossover were mostly ignored or retconned later (In Kurt Busiek's "Avengers Forever" series).

If I was in charge, I'd let the character lie fallow for a while between Avengers 2 and 3. I wouldn't have a problem with Rhodey taking over for a while at the end of Avengers 3, leading into Iron Man 4 and 5.

By the time Iron Man 5's done, we're so far down the line (10 years from now ?) recasting Tony wouldn't seem so jarring.

I'm thinking after Avengers 2 comes out, we can see more TV spin-offs coming out, I guess. Well, maybe others in response to the movie.

Honestly, I'm not that worried about not getting a fourth RDJ Iron Man movie. If they are going to keep introducing new characters, then it makes sense that they would retire earlier ones. Iron Man was the first character introduced, so it makes sense he would be the first one retired. If some of the other new characters aren't as successful as the last few have been then maybe I could see recasting and bringing the character back. Honestly, I'd rather get a new character, than another movie with a character who will have gotten 5 movies by the AoU comes out.

If they did a Black Panther movie, then how would they work out a live-action Wakanda? Translate everyone into English like in Captain America: The First Avenger?

    Probably.

They're certainly not going to invent a fictional language. Unless Wakkandan is an actual Bantu language. It's possible, but extremely unlikely, that they could do that.

Why is this even a question? We've had English coming out of the mouths of non English speaking characters ever since movies have been made in English. Including aliens and fictional cultures.

Marvel retiring Iron Man in film is about as likely as DC/Warners retiring Batman in film. ;)

I have to say I find this very amusing (and I agree completely). Way back in 2007 and 2008, people thought Iron Man was a risk because it wasn't a known quality outside fandom like Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, X-Men, etc. And yet, seven, six years later, we're comparing him to Batman. Of course, one has to ask is this because the character is actually interesting to the general public or the interest largely due to Robert Downey Jr.'s undeniable charismatic performance, and unless Marvel finds a similar actor, the general public will turn against it?

I think because of RDJ, Iron Man himself has been catapulted into the psyche of people. I believe that now, Iron Man can stand on his own without the need of RDJ, much like Batman.

Iron Man and Cap are Marvel Studos' VIPs now. Maybe Guardians of the Galaxy too.

I don't think Thor has quite reached that level yet with the public. Hulk of course is very well known, but Marvel is afraid of giving him his own solo movie again.

Wolverine and Spider-Man being banned from MCU films was a blessing in disguise. :p

If the most iconic superhero role ever Adam West as Batman can be recast, so can Iron Man. The character existed long before the movie.
