I'm becoming rather concerned that Doctor Who is becoming a bit over Scottish lately. The showrunner Steven Moffat is Scottish, and in his first series he cast a Scottish companion. Okay, that's fine, I didn't like either of them but others did. Then he cast a Scot as the twelfth doctor, starting to border excessive but Rose Leslie is rumoured to be the next companion, who is also Scottish. Now this is starting to get stupid, if true this would mean that next year the doctor, the companion and the showrunner would all the Scottish, I'm concerned that Moffat is showing favouritism to Scottish people. Yes the bookies odds that Leslie will become the next companion are 14/1 but she's the most rumoured candidate for the part and even if it's untrue, it highlighted to me that Moffat seems to be showing favouritism to the Scottish because he himself is Scottish.

Now Scotland is part of Britain and Doctor Who is British, but it's becoming a bit silly that everyone's becoming Scottish on the show. Sure for years most people were English on the show but the English accent is sort of the "default" accent of Britain and besides through the years there have been multiple different accents and nationalities on the show. But it's a bit of a coincidence that since Moffat, a Scot has taken charge of the show he's cast both a Scottish companion and doctor in his time and is rumoured (although probably unlikely) to cast another Scottish companion. Yes there have been Scottish cast members on the show pre Moffat, Jamie in the late 60s, McCoy as the doctor in the late 80s and Tennant in the mid 00s (although he used an English accent) so I won't count him. So it's not like the Scots haven't been represented on the show before. But Moffat seems to be becoming rather excessive with casting Scots, lets just hope that the next companion isn't Scottish. If he sticks to just having one companion (Amy Pond) and one doctor (Capaldi) being Scottish then he can get away with it as they were on the show at different times, but Moffat himself is also Scottish making it three major people since he started on the show Socttish but it's only really if he casts another Scot as the companion things will get stupid. To be honest I doubt even Moffat would be so stupid as to cast another Scottish character. But the fact that another Scot has been mentioned alone is rather worrying.

So, what's your opinions on this?

It's actually a secret plan when Scotland declares independence to take Doctor Who with them.

The 10th Doctor was Scottish as well. As was the 7th Doctor. There was a companion that was a Scottish Highlander complete with kilt and everything. However, that pales in comparison to the number of English companions and Doctors over the years. I'd bet, in terms of population, the English are overrepresented. I'd also guess the Welsh are underrepresented. Why no Welsh Doctor?

Isle of Man has only 84,000 people on it. That one's not as big a deal.

Oh too be a child again and all one needs to be worried about is whether or not there is a Scottish agenda within Doctor Who.

Hm, Moffat himself being scottish can hardly count as favouritism.

That leaves 2 cast members at different times to be cast so far.

I don't see the Problem. Rory hasn't been Scottish, Clara hasn't been, Vastra and Jenny haven't been, Strax is not (though he enjoys their company best apparently), River is not, I don't think there have been any one-off companions either that fit the bill....

This and the Monty Python clip (apparently I can't quote it) pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter. That and everything Alidar said.

That's like posting a thread back in 2009 saying 'Are the gays taking over Doctor Who?' (Producer/writer, Captain Jack, etc).

I wouldn't say no to a Welsh doctor. I find it silly that England and Wales had been well presented and yet Wales hasn't been as well presented. And it's usually filmed in Wales! Although I suppose Torchwood presented the Welsh well so I'd say that covers them for now. Still the Northern Irish haven't been presented at all that I can recall apart from the companion in the audio "Dark Eyes". But I suppose Northern Irish are more associated with the Republic of Ireland which isn't part of Britain.

Yes, but you are too late, the plan is already in motion, and is now crossing the entire UK, never stopping, never faltering, never fading. People and TV shows and actors will become Scottish. And the Welsh will become Scots, and the Irish will become... Scots. And the Tartan agenda will continue, breaking through the rift at the heart of the Big Ben and into every pearly queen, every jellied eel, every single corner of this green and pleasant land. *This* is my ultimate victory, Green Lantern! The destruction of everything non Scottish *itself*!

Ian Fleming was so impressed with Sean Connery he ended up inserting Scottish background for James Bond in the novels. Or is this another layer in the complex master plan for the Scots to take over the world?

Okay, while I am getting a good laugh out of this thread, the very idea the Scots are taking over Doctor Who is really ridiculous. Hell, RTD was Welsh, and moved Doctor Who production to Wales when he took over, and its still filmed in Wales, but the Welsh sure haven't taken over the franchise.

Or does the Master Plan involve the Welsh softening Doctor Who up for its eventual Scottish ownership? It's only step 1 towards the world becoming one massive Scottish Empire. I guess we all better start shopping for kilts, I hear they're going to become the enforced male fashion pretty soon.

RTD being Welsh is the main reason Doctor Who can get away with mocking Wales, imo. That and they're not even a Kingdom. ;)

BTW, wikipedia has approximately 50 companions listed. I'm not going to dive into the details about what is a companion and obviously some are far more important than others, but it's a good easy number to reference. Based on that, the companions should be broken down as:

    English: 41
    Scottish: 4
    Welsh: 3
    Irish: 1
    Other: 1

By "other" I mean American, Australian, French, etc., not "Time Lord." If the actor or actress is English, they should be counted as English.
    Showing my work:
    Code:
    England: 53,012,456 5/6 = .83 = 41.5
    Scotland: 5,327,700 1/12 = .08 = 4
    Wales: 3,063,456 1/20 = .05 = 2.5
    Nothern Ireland: 1,841,245 1/60 = .016 = 0.8
    Other: 1/60 = .016 = 0.8

How does that compare to how they actually break down?
Another interesting breakdown would be by race/ethnicity.
