Very big series this weekend. Come on Oakland. Make this happen. The Angelenos have enough money floating around to have a shot at it the next two years.
    It's our time!

    No!

    :klingon:

Of course I want the Angels to win every game. Practically speaking, if we take just one, we'll get out of Oakland and go home with the division lead.

That's true. There is a lot more pressure on us than on y'all. Plus we play another series in your stadium next weekend I believe.

    Should be an exciting race.

So the Red Sox just signed Rusney Castillo, the latest Cuban "phenom," to a six-year, $72 million deal. I'm not entirely surprised after they missed out on Jose Abreu, but I hope Castillo doesn't wind up being the first of these guys to bust. Someone (I don't know who, exactly) described him as "Brett Gardner with power," a comparison I'm rather skeptical of since "Brett Gardner with power" would be one of the best players in baseball. But we'll see how it goes.

If my math is right, that's less money per season than they're paying Victorino. It's a lot of cash for a guy who's never played a lick of baseball at the major league level, but a bargain if he's even slightly over league-average. If he's outright bad, though, that's more problematic, but the Red Sox have a ton of payroll flexibility at the moment. That being said, putting that kind of money out there is a sign they don't have a ton of faith in Jackie Bradley or even possibly Betts...

I think the Red Sox have decided to move on from Jackie Bradley. Which is too bad, I like him a lot, but for some reason he just hasn't been able to figure out how to hit Major League pitching. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes part of some package in an offseason trade for a pitcher. As for Betts, I don't think they've given up on him yet, since they haven't really given him much time yet to show what he can do.

And the Jays continue their freefall.

And somehow the GM and manager are expected to keep their jobs next season.

    Only one game behind now.
    Sonny G. goes almost a complete game. 5-3 Oakland. Let's go A's!

not sure about Castillo, but happy to see the move. Sox have the payroll flexibility, and these are the kinds of moves they need to make occasionally. And OF FAs aren't looking special, and we're not deep in the minors there, so why not? Agree with sentiment that hope it isn't a makeup call for missing on Abreu. Abreu would have been a perfect fit, and would have meant not resigning Napoli (not bad, just was at the same time, so would have been a wash there).

See what the offseason brings, but looks like Bradley is going to have to go somewhere, or stay in the minors for depth for now Amazing glove, bat isn't ready yet. Certainly shaping up for the Sox to make a big move somewhere, though....

Manny Machado is out for the year. Fucking hell, just when everything was looking up for the O's.

Edit: Here's a fun video, Eric Gagne vs. Bonds. Bonds pulls a 101 mph fastball completely out of the stadium, then hits the next pitch to straight center. It's a crime he isn't in the Hall.

Manny will be missed, but the O's hopefully will find a way to keep plugging away.

Now he's had a third major injury to his knees. Not that its any excuse for throwing a bat, but he was reacting to a second close call to his knees in a matter of days. If I were that young with that much talent, I'd be upset if an opposing team was going after my knees.

Now the folks who said he got what he deserved can come out and gloat.

So because I was horrified at Javier Baez's strikeout rate, I decided to check his TTO percentage on Fangraphs (shut up, I was bored). Baez's current TTO is 52.56%, but obviously he doesn't qualify due to a lack of plate appearances. The leader of the league is (of course) Adam Dunn, who just so happens to have a TTO percentage of exactly 50 right now (19 homers, 64 walks and 125 strikeouts in 416 plate appearances).

    Other notables:

    Chris Davis: 49.89%
    Chris Carter: 46.49%
    Giancarlo Stanton: 46.22%
    Mike Napoli: 45.63%
    B.J. Upton: 41.70%
    Mike Trout: 41.64%
    Carlos Santana: 41.34%
    Ryan Howard: 41.33%
    Justin Upton: 40.93%
    Paul Goldschmidt: 40.29%

What, did you see his 4AB, 4SO line from yesterday?

I only surprised has actually has 4BB. For a while, his BA & OBP were the same.

I'm actually genuinely troubled by Baez's K rate, and Bryant's is even worse. I know that Epstein and Hoyer were always planning on stockpiling hitters and then buying pitchers when the window opened, but I'm worried that there's a systemic issue in the Cubs' farm. "Pray for the dinger" was the team's institutional philosophy 15 years ago, and we saw how well that worked out.

I don't understand how an owner is allowed to run a team into the ground and they just let him buy another one?

Mike Trout's production seems to be flat-lining as well.

I am really concerned that the eventual winner of the AL West will be so bloodied by the end of the season that they will get swept by the Royals or O's. :scream:
