Anything that states canonically where the second door in TAS goes?

Gene Roddenberry stated that the second door added to the bridge in The Animated Series was a "second turbolift", in case the first one gets stuck. But Franz Joseph postulated the more logical theory (IMO) that it goes to an 'outer ring' corridor of the bridge, which in turn has access to an emergency exit stairway down to Deck 2 and beyond, as well as the unseen toilet facilities, access to external airlock, etc.

I can't recall immediately, but I do seem the vaguely remember that the only time we ever saw anybody use the door was once when Kirk entered the bridge from it. I think it was in "One Of Our Planets Is Missing", but I can't remember clearly if that is true or not.

Is there any evidence on screen as to where this door goes, exactly? If so, are we meant to assume that it was there in TOS, even though it's self-evidently not on the actual sets? Or, like the additional work-stations on the bridge of the D in Generations, are we meant to assume that in-universe, it was a structural addition made during some refit between the original series and TAS?

    That seems rather likely.

The original configuration might have been: Single turbolift. First stop is the 'outer ring' corridor FJ spoke of, then it continues down into the ship. The refit probably added the second door for direct access to the outer ring corridor.

(Or perhaps the second door goes to a briefing room, like Voyager's does.)

Or it's the emergency turbolift to the restroom. Since Roddenberry later declared TAS wasn't canon, whether anything on it's canonical is open for debate.

Are you sure it wasn't a door to the toilet? I seem to recall something saying or blueprint showing a bathroom (which always made me wonder who could do their business that close to the Bridge?). :wtf:

Would you really have a choice? I don't know if the crew rotations were ever specified for 22nd century starships, but I remember TNG suggesting that the bridge crew (barring crises and incidents) was rotated on eight hour shifts. Most people are going to need to use the facilities at least 2 or 3 times in that sort of time period, and it's hardly conducive to a well run ship to have them constantly running to the mess hall or their quarters instead of having a bathroom somewhere close by...

Here's the Franz Joseph bridge plan I was talking about:

As you can see, it incorporates the secondary door as seen in TAS, but has it leading to an 'outer ring' service corridor (also allowing the bridge crew access to the toilet). Not sure how that works in TOS where the secondary door patently didn't exist, though.... the gangway steps seen there are said to be the emergency foot access out of Deck 1 in the event of the turbolift malfunctioning.

Now there's a thought. :) I do seem to recall that the scene before we see Kirk enter through the secondary door, the scene is of him alone communicating with somebody over one of those desk mounted screens. It could have been a conference room..... :techman:

Maybe it was to a newly built ready room for Kirk. IIRC, he never had one in TOS itself. I always wondered why.

We just had a topic on this. Start here: http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=8690503 and read down.

It was pointed out in the other topic that the screencaps for "Beyond the Farthest Star" reveal the door to be a turbolift.

I still prefer to think of it as Franz Jospeh depicted - access to the bathroom and stairs to deck 2.

^ wait, what? Isn't the head supposed to be near the viewscreen in the FJ blueprints? IIRC, the head is directly to the right of the screen, accessible through some kind of hidden panel or doorway. It's on the other side of the bridge from the turbolifts.

Where Scotty goes to the bathroom when he's drunk and doesn't know any better...
