Well, the 1990 Captain America movie was very close to the original material (except for making the Red Skull Italian for some reason). But it was awful in many ways (despite some good bits).

It was a mistake. He simply didn't look like Superman. He looked like some AmerAsian college jock playing dress-up. Superman should have a classic "Soviet athlete" look, like the Klitchko brothers.

Yeah, it's pretty bad, but they do get points for trying, especially Salinger, who totally played it straight.

What does political correctness have to do with Superman or any other character. Are the comic geeks so afraid of change that they can't open their mind to different stories. We are not doing a recount of a historical event, it is a fictionally story about imaginary people. Maybe everyone just loves the bad old days when other people knew their place and wouldn't get uppity.

It's a way of dressing up what's just a "macaroni-and-cheese" complaint to sound more substantial and serious.

On the other hand, the example of Jesse Owens was an even better one and ironic on more levels. :)

As someone who is NOT white, I few political correctness as a great weakness in this country that already has to deal with the sheer stupidity of oversensitivity (the terms "agree to disagree" and "respectively disagree" are gone and replaced by "How dare you say something I dion't agree with? You need to be fired!").

Political correctness means it's okay to make Batman or Superman into someone who isn't white, but if you make Storm or Spawn someone who isn't black, all hell is going to break loose.

Political correctness is a movie producer asking a writer if he can change the Middle Eastern terrorists to Filipino (true story).

Perhaps so, but whatever "PC problem" there is, is described in the second clause of that sentence rather than the first.

No the problem is that diversity=political correctness for some people. I remember Eddie Murphy saying how many complaints he got for Boomerang because there were not enough white people working at this big ad agency. And Storm and Blade were both white up until recently. There skin was just darker than the others.

Today's political correctness is just vulgar.

Uh...no. At least as far as Storm is concerned, I've been reading X-Men since the character's introduction. She was black from the get go.

There are so many, many things worse than vulgarity. Racism, for one.

Perhaps not, but I'd rather do without either one, personally. PC isn't an abolition of racism, it's a surrender to it.

Whatever. Colorblind casting isn't "PC" - people shout "PC" at the idea because, unlike racism, the charge is treated as respectable.

Whatever indeed. PC IS a respectable charge, if not keeping the established integrity of a character, whatever the race, is done because you want to...not be racist?

Yes, let's have Shaft played by Adam Baldwin.

Do I think AB could actually play an interesting spin on Shaft? Yes. But would that fundamentally change or alter the character, maybe in a way that doesn't serve the character or story? Also yes.

But if you feel compelled to change the race of a character, especially out of misguided notions of "beating racism", and for no other reason, that's PC, of the most craven, anti-intellectual kind.

^ It depends on whether the ethnicity of the character is actually relevant to the character. You couldn't change the ethnicity of Shaft because that's intrinsic to who he is. Likewise, you can't change the ethnicity of Captain America because that's intrinsic to his setting. But Superman's an alien--an immigrant who embraces the American dream; his ethnicity is irrelevant. People seem to be complaining for no other reason than 'it wouldn't look right', which has fuckall to do with the character and everything to do with their expectations.

(Oh, and if we followed your hyperbolic fear of ever changing a character to update them from their origins in a racist time period to a more contemporary one, we would never have gotten Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. And Sam Jackson is Nick Fury.)

EDIT: Still haven't figured out that multi-quote feature, I see.

    Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Well, when you are talking about a well known, highly visible, VALUABLE property, which Superman is, better have a better reason to change things up than, "this would be so cool and PROGRESSIVE". I mean, I loved Superman Returns, but most didn't care for emo Supes. And that still was very close to the character as he is.

On the other hand, I thought Kingpin played by Ving Rhames worked. The movie blew, but not his part.

    No, I just don't give a frak.

    Factually yours, Junius Stone
