Zardoz WTF??

Zardoz is a great movie. Wild visuals, topical social commentary embedded in an over-the-top storyline and some of the best movie nudity ever. It's a relic of a day when imagination counted for something.

... but you apparently need to say it twice.

ETA: I read the novelization in '74 and didn't see the film until a lot later. I agree with the director John Boorman that it works better as a novel than as a film.

I just saw, what apparently is a cult film..

is it me or is there a certain time frame and criteria for what is considered cult material..

singing, annoyingly-overly emotional acting, and cheesy social commentary themes.. and outrageous and nonsensical nudity..

Little Shop of horrors,
Zardoz,
Rocky Horror
Barbarella

Just some crazy 60's to 80's pot smoking, heroine, and LSD fantasy movies of crazed weirdness..

Okay so the movie was way out of the norm.. Star Trek did much better with it's super psychic society renderings back in the 60's and they were on a shoe string budget..

still...

all things considered, I did like the floating giant stone head..

But the whole wizard of Oz connection "Zard-OZ" just seemed so contrived and silly...not a Sean Connery Movie I would recommend..

Love Zardoz, how can you resist a film with the line "I'm tired of 500years of washing up".
Watched it 3 times before I understood it

I might have liked it back in the day, had I remained under an illegal medical Mary status.. as it stands I had to become an upstanding father and gave that up..

though were I an adult of the 70's that part was required to be a good citizen..LOL

but Zardoz?? Mmmmm.. nah..

I would have been a definite Logan's Run fan...

It was just on tv recently here. I watched it. Lost my way through part of it, I think because I'm expecting some big philosophical lesson, and there's just a simple one.

But Connery in the red diaper? Hey, it covers the area I prefer to look at. I'm bad--so fascinated with mens' crotches--but interested only in Hubby's. Only fair. Lots of topless women for Hubby to ogle in the film, I'll take a scantily-clad Connery to ogle.

This is one of those movies I just will not EVER watch again. I'll rewatch some stuff I thought was bad but this goes so far beyond that it is never going to be viewed voluntarily by me again.

But without Zardoz, we would have never had the Superman villain Vartox.

Zardoz was released in February 1974; Vartox first appeared in November 1974.

One of those legendarily terrible movies, like Caligula, that one of these days I've gotta see.

Can't possibly be worse than After Last Season.
