You do not see tanks with armoured cars attached that they can drop to do scouting. Aircraft carriers do not have missile frigates in the hangars taking up space, and B52's dont carry F16's for air cover. These are independant units which can work with the larger stuff in a combined force, they dont need to be carried 'just in case'. Citing one-off experiments which never proved practical proves nothing.

If you are allocated 100,000 tons of materials to build the best battleship you can, you dont build a 75,000 ton battleship and a 25,000 ton cargo ship that fits in the back of it so that it doesn't need to visit ports so much. You already have cargo ships, just as you will already have frigates and fighters and so forth. You compromise your primary design and waste resources. Belisarius has designed a really nice looking ship, and is in danger of wasting it so he can fit another separate ship in the back of it. I think it's another manifestation of the syndrome where people feel that a single Trek ship always operates alone and must be capable of performing every role in the fleet.

It's not so much that, as I was toying with the idea because of the ship's specific mission role. It was designed to operate alone for longer than any other starship class in history. We're talking several years without returning to a refit yard or starbase for resupply.

That being said, I definitely understand your point. I'll probably end up reverting back to the original ventral engineering hull configuration and lose the scout ship idea entirely.

Good design that fits into the NG era lineage.

Wow...it's been a while since I've had the time or inclination to sit down and work on this. Small update, but you'll notice I'm playing with the nacelle pylon design. I've also added an idea for the engineering section impulse engines...recessed into the connecting hull ("neck") on either side. Much like elongated engine cowlings on an attack helicopter. I really like this design...and I wasn't a huge fan of the Galaxy class. She didn't always photograph well from certain angles...in my opinion. However, this profile has a strong but graceful appeal to it. Almost swan-like...in a good way. I like the design of the rear of the neck and the off-set bulge at the bottom of the primary hull. Can't wait to see other angles and hopefully a 3-D rendering. Awesome work. :-)

Heck, you could put Defiant as its aerowing. With that strong jawline to the secondary hull, you could call it the USS Leno.

Another relatively minor update. Real life is keeping me from really focusing on this project, so I pick at it when I can. Haven't gone over this and cleaned up viewports yet...I'll be reducing the number visible on the upper decks, especially. Only thing left to do with this perspective is finish the engineering hull and tweak the "textures." Then on to the dorsal view!
