The only reason the Cardassians were any good at all was because there was two great actors playing to pretty good characters. As a whole, they were extremely uninspired.

Why?

Kirk versus computers is a running theme in TOS. The Borg would be the ultimate culmination of that theme.

It would be really easy to make an argument that, conceptually, the Borg work better as an adversary to Kirk than they do to Picard.

Which I think could be great, depending on the execution.

The Borg haven't been seen on the big screen in twenty-plus years. A trilogy of films centered around them could be great. A first film would be the loss of Earth and the Federation, the second: about Spock and the Borg which feed his need for seemingly logical perfection (shades of TMP), the third: a race to the Borg homeworld with a WMD.

The Cardassians were basically just Klingons or Romulans without literally being Klingons or Romulans.

Not really, the Klingons have their whole honour code (which admittedly they don't always live up to) which makes them warriors looking for a worthy fight and respect for their stronger enemies. The Romulans are all about the subterfuge and sneak attacks, whereas the Cardassians are just a pure blunt force trauma.

At least in terms of the occupation they didn't have any agenda, they just saw a planet with untapped resources and took it. I'd be interested to see how Kirk would try to fight/defend against that without them having a specific ideology he can use against them?

The Borg haven't been seen on the big screen in twenty-plus years. A trilogy of films centered around them could be great. A trilogy would be too much, the Borg are best used sparingly with big impact. Like I said, they became a massive part of TNG but only appeared in 4 Stories. 4!!! It's really only Khan who's left such an impression with so little screen time. As for the loss of the Earth and the Federation, that just changes waaaaaaay too much and negates any further story telling. Not even the Destiny trilogy went that far.

No, it doesn't. If the Federation falls, then there are a plethora of stories to be told about it rebuilding.

Ok, when I say storytelling, I mean Star Trek storytelling. As much as the Kelvinverse has been doing its own thing (blowing up Vulcan), the whole point of it was to return to the Original series, and spirit of Star Trek. Destrying the Federation would take it too far from the roots it specifically chose to return to.

If it wanted to go that far out there, it would have started from a completely clean slate.

Sure so lets use small universe syndrome as our next set of bad guys since the only ones around are Borgs, Klinks, Rommies or Cardies.
How about the Borg queen looking just like Lady Amanda Grayson, will Spock kill his momma, does Sarek want his wife back? Bet it makes millions.
Or the Federation council is taken over by Changelings, Trip comes back from the dead to save the day.

As much as the Kelvinverse has been doing its own thing (blowing up Vulcan), the whole point of it was to return to the Original series, and spirit of Star Trek.

Kirk saving humanity and giving it hope is very much in the spirit of Star Trek.

To hell with it, rising tensions between the Federation and the Klingon empire since the Khan incursion is interrupted by a fleet of strange cube-shaped vessels destroying Klingon and Federation bases... Forcing an uneasy alliance, and ultimately the Kelvin version of the Khitomer deal.

We saw how well a new adversary was embraced by general audiences.

Doing a reboot doesn't mean ditching everything that came before.

True, but on a much larger scale, Star Trek is about humanity going out there and seeking out new life and new civilisations. You can't do that if TWO Federation founding planets have been destryoed and you're having to rebuild your own.

Are you suggesting Trek fans wouldn't show up for a Kelvin Borg movie? Whether I agreed with the creative decision or not I'd be counting down the days to release. I'm really not that fickle. It would take a hell of a lot for me to not support Star Trek, what that red line would be I don't know.

I think I would qualify as an "old fan", and have no issue with using the Borg.

I'd argue against this. The Enterprise in the series was on a five year voyage of exploring the unknown (likewise TNG was all about the discovery). Sure they had to defend the federation in doing so, but that was the vast minority of episodes where the danger was just to the ship and the crew.

I can't think of any TV series ever where the opening credits included something superfluous to explaining what is the premise of the show as a whole.

I can't think of any TV series ever where the opening credits included something superfluous to explaining what is the premise of the show as a whole.

Someone did a review and most episodes were about defense, search and rescue, transfer of supplies...

Only die hard fans would know that the adversary is new, the general audience would not care, they just want to see a good movie.
