Zachary Quinto: ‘No Guarantees’ For Another Star Trek Film

Captain of the USS Averof

Zachary Quinto was on NBC’s Today show this morning promoting his new film Aardvark. When asked by host Al Roker if he had any “insight as to what is coming up” for the next Star Trek movie he replied:

"I don’t know Al. We are waiting. I know they were working on a script for another one and we will see how that all plays out."

He added:

"I’m hopeful that we will do another [Star Trek film], but there [are] no guarantees."

Whomever is in charge at Paramount now, they don't seem to be in a big rush to schedule the next installment.

Kelvin Timeline R. I. P.

The films are moderately popular. Paramount may recast or create new characters going forward to cut costs.

Or it could be dead.

If they do go forward, I think the Hemsworth idea won't be done. They'll go in a different direction.

I agree. Something tells me this idea of Hemsworth will not be done, either.
I'm afraid they can take a break and redefine it again, without time travel. Something based on Starfleet Academy, for example.

I'm inclined to think that if we don't hear anything definitive by this time next year, the next movie will probably feature a new cast and new producers.

I know they were working on a script

This, combined with Pine's comments on waiting on a script, at least suggests there is some movement on the project so that's encouraging.

Discovery is looming on the horizon so it's not like we won't be getting a fix anytime soon.

Chris Pine's exact quote regarding the script was:

"I haven’t really heard anything about it. I haven’t gotten the script, so we will see what happens."

Not especially encouraging I would say. I'm still hoping though.

I still think a new Kelvin-era film will be created and released.

The indecisive and disorganized nature at the corporate level though continues to amaze.

It shouldn't take 3 or 4 years to produce another film or market the ones you are producing like you want them to succeed. I've been extremely happy with the new films themselves in-universe. But really, Paramount sucks at what they do.

The genre is different; the state of the market is different but compare Paramount's 'Trek' to both the DC Universe and the Marvel Universe and their plans for movies.
Shatner said that the studios always treated the latest-released Trek movie as the last...

"There are no guarantees" is always something that it's easy to look into without there being anything worth finding. There's never any guarantees with anything, Star Trek Beyond went through a number of changes during development, and all he's effectively saying is "we're still waiting".

It wouldn't surprise me if Discovery is higher on the list of priorities right now, but there's still work going on in the background.

Two different companies. CBS controls TV Trek, Paramount the movies.

Yeah, pretty much what BillJ said. Paramount's Star Trek (1)4 's production is totally irrelevant to the production and scheduling of CBS' Star Trek: Discovery. CBS and Paramount are two different companies since Viacom split in 2005. Different companies, different and irrelevant productions and schedules.

Fair enough, didn't realise this, but my initial point still stands.

It took Into Darkness four whole years to be released after '09 (four and a half if you count it's original release date of December 08), and Beyond was only released nine months ago. Regardless of how early 14 was announced, Quinto's quote doesn't change the fact that it's still too early to hear anything concrete either way and/or be writing it off completely.

That porn stache is impressive.
They should do a Mirror-Kelvin one and Quinto can upgrade his tache to a goatee.

And there will be a next one, guys. Just a matter of when. Many less successful franchises get sequels and Trek is too iconic to be left on the shelf. They, afterall, can't keep their hands off Superman, Batman and all the rest of them.
