Your thoughts on "Wolverine and the X-Men"?

Isn't there a Clint Eastwood movie called Deadpool? I think it refers to a pool (collection) of betting/gambling?

Oh, that's right. It's actually The Dead Pool, which Wikipedia tells me is the final Dirty Harry film. And it's named for, yes, a type of betting pool pertaining to when someone will die or which person will die next.

So it's not as much a typical Liefeldesque gibberish character name as I thought. Sure sounds like one, though.

(While we're on the subject, why the hell is Cable called Cable? How are we supposed to be impressed or intimidated by a guy who sounds like his purpose in life is to deliver reruns and home shopping channels to your living room? Though on second thought, that's a pretty intimidating concept... :D )
I always assumed it was because Cable was the thread(cable) that held everything together. Jean, Cyclopes, Phoenix, Rachel, Mother Asknai, Mr. Sinister, Apocalypse, Ahab, Madie Pryor, Stryfe all = Cable. It's like half the history of the X-Men is all rests on him coming to be and fullfilling his destiny.

Thats a fairly interesting way of looking at it, one I hadn't ever thought of and I've been reading the X-books for 20 years now. While thats a good explanation for his name NOW, we have to remember that Cable wasn't originally intended to be the son of Cyclops. In fact, I believe Liefeld originally planned for him to be a version of Cannonball, travelling backwards through time. Hmm, actually, I guess you could still use the same line of thinking in saying he's called Cable because he serves as a link from one timeline to the next. :confused:

^Or maybe Liefeld just thought "Cable" sounded like "Cannonball." Between what you're saying here and Deadpool/Deathstroke, I'm starting to think that Liefeld's approach to character creation boiled down to "copy existing character and change the name slightly."

But wait a minute... do you mean Cannonball as in Sam Guthrie, or somebody else?

The fan mag Marvel Age ran images of some of Liefeld's proposed characters, including Cable, before they actually appeared. (It's amazing how similar they all looked.) He was listed with a couple possible names, including "Cable" or "Cybrid." Sounds like Liefeld didn't have the origin nailed down that solidly. Not the greatest way to create characters, but it also means it might not have been a copy.

I believe I still have that issue. I'll have to dig it out again... if I want to subject myself to Liefeld's art again....

I'm fairly certain it would have been Sam Guthrie/Cannonball and not another character. I don't know for certain if this was actually in the cards to be revealed or only part of the planning process, but if you read Liefelds short run on X-Force, you can almost see the formation of this idea. Of course, everything that was introduced about Sam has since been retcon'd.

As far as Liefeld ripping off other characters, I also thought I had read that he actually designed several new looks for New Teen Titan characters as a planned proposal for DC (which, at the time, he was coming off a somewhat popular Hawk & Dove mini). When that didn't pan, he recycled a lot of that into the New Mutants. That may not be 100% correct, but I've been hearing that for years...hell, all the way back to those ancient days before the internet.

:guffaw::guffaw:

No doubt.
Ever notice how Stryfe looks like a Showgun Warrior?
They were a big deal around the time Liefeld was a young boy.;)
