Your Shot Down Theories

I was another of those that believed that the monster was only an elephant. Hey - if you could have polar bears...

The smoke monster kinda buried that one.

They essentially knew they were roughly a few thousand miles or so, from Sydney. All I really remember is Arzt coming over to the raft & telling them that they were on the cusp of monsoon season, & giving them some rant about needing to get launched before the trade winds shifted from northerly to southerly, otherwise they would have to wait four months, before they could launch, in order to not end up heading toward Antarctica
Well...that assumes they were where they were "supposed" to be...but I guess that early on, they had no suspicions to the contrary. ;)

They have to know roughly where they are in longitude. All you have to do is compare the time the Sun is up to the time on your watch when you left Sydney, and you can figure that out easily.

Latitude is a bit trickier, but if any of them knew astronomy, they could work it out to a good deal of precision by using the stars.
