The Nazi Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, the National Socialist German Workers’ Party), probably one of the most obscene examples of ethno nationalist, racist purists, and simple hatred, exploited the association of socialism to attract support. Hitler: “We are socialists. We are the enemies of today’s capitalist system of exploitation … and we are determined to destroy this system under all conditions.”

Obviously that was bullshit but it was to draw people in. Socialism as a word and ideology of the people is quite powerful.

Then why does Socialism tend to work in places like Western Europe, Oceania, Canada etc...

Sure some people when they get into power will engage in things like gerrymandering, voter suppression, imposing restrictions on voters etc...

But it seems to some even that is too much socialism or that they don't realise that socialism like many political ideologies can have a wide spectrum of variations.

That's kind of what I gravitate to thinking Australia is. We are defined as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy. It's er... complicated. We have the Queen and Governor General but of course a Prime Minister. Federal and State Government. Social services are part of our psyche. We're kind of democratic socialist/capitalists with a compulsory voting system and an identity crisis
