Your Personal Top 20 TNG Ep's List

The TNG starter kit

1 Encounter @ Farpoint 1 & 2 (Might as well star with the pilot)
2 The Battle (Good Picard backstory)
3 The Emissary
4 Datalore (A must see)
5 The Measure Of A Man (Another Must See)
6 Q Who (Totally Mandatory)
7 The Enemy
8 The Defector
9 Yesterday's Enterprise
10 The Offspring
11 Sins Of The Father
12 Best Of Both Worlds 1 & 2
13 Family
14 Brothers (More History)
15 Reunion
16 The Wounded (Just a brilliant episode)
17 Redemption 1 & 2 (No explanation needed)
18 Unification 1 & 2 (Ditto)
19 I Borg (Must see this one)
20 Relics (C'mon you watched the Spock one, you might as well watch the Scotty one)
21 Chain Of Command 1 & 2
22 Birthright 1 & 2
23 Descent 1 & 2
24 The Pegasus
25 All Good Things 1 & 2

Basically you should watch every two part episode, with the exceptions of Time's Arrow & Gambit, not that they aren't good, just not necessary

personally, i'd rather watch gambit than either birthright or descent. i loved that episode! :D

Birthright was downright boring and Descent Pt. 2 was possibly the worst 2nd parter ever.

Birthright is really the only episode where I seperate the two because of the quality. Birthright I had that absolutely spine tangling dream sequence which set it wide apart from the Worf story and part 2. If it wasn't for the Part 1 dream sequence, I probably would have listed Birthright as one of my least favorite episodes.

I've really enjoyed the Virgin 1 repeats of The Next Generation. Here are twenty of my most fond stories (in no real order):

"Cause and Effect"

"Tapestry"

"Chain of Command"

"Frame of Mind"

"The Inner Light"

"The Pegasus"

"Parallels"

"The Wounded"

"Family"

"Unification"

"All Good Things"

"The Battle"

"Where Silence Has Lease"

"Brothers"

"Second Chances"

"Descent"

"Tin Man"

"Galaxy's Child"

"The First Duty"

"Remember Me"

Glad to see others enjoy "Remember Me". That along with "Future Imperfect" are my two favorite episodes of TNG.

Yeah, "Future Imperfect" is a cool episode I don't see people talk about much. It's kind of like a less crazy and over-the-top "Frame of Mind". I love how Riker outsmarts the illusion and when he says "I'll always think of you as Jean-Luc" it's kinda cheesy, but sweet at the same time, like Spock telling Kirk he's ashamed of his feelings of friendship towards Kirk in "The Naked Time".

Not much love for Gambit, eh? Personally I thought that was a great two-parter - some good action sequences and great interaction between characters. Nice flashes of humour as well.
Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, but Lessons is a personal favourite, it was a great character episode for Picard.

I'll agree that Birthright II was rather weak, but, not all that bad, & the first part was just wonderful Data stuff

My main problems with Gambit are Troi's diatribe about Riker having a monopoly on pain or whatever,(One of her worst deliveries ever) Worf acting like such a big baby that the android has to put him in his place, & the whole Romulan who's actually a Vulcan posing as a Romulan, whose actually just a Romulan... double agent nonsence

It's not terrible, but not a very interesting two parter, imo

HI:
Not very good with the names:
My favs:
1. Attached
2. The Host
3. Sub Rosa
4. Shades of Gray
5. Any with Q in them.
6. Any with Loxwana Troi in them.
7. The one where the crew were all turning into some sort of reptile.
8. The one where Kaylar(sp) brought Worf's son to him. In fact, that was the ONLY Klingon/Worf episodes I liked!

7. A Few Good Things.

And I really think they should have made the book "Q in Law" into an episode or a film! Unfortunately with the death of Majel Barrett Roddenberry they can't unless they cast a new Loxwana and that would be just plain WRONG!

I tried to cut the list down to 20, but I couldn't, so I have a list of 25. Some of my favorites still didn't make the list.

1. Encounter at Farpoint (I think it's a poor episode, but since it's the pilot, it's important.)

This seems like a weird choice and explanatory comment. I thought the point of this thread is to list your personal favourite episodes. You call this a poor episode. If you'd justified listing it by saying you like it even though you think it's poor objectively, it being in your list would make more sense, but putting it at number one because it's important seems to be missing the point if we're ranking episodes according to personal preference rather than significance.
^

Just sayin', the pilot, finale and Borg two parter are always goin' to be in these lists, so I tried to avoid 'em.

Dude WTF? The thread is YOUR PERSONAL Top 20. Why in the world would you leave out some of your favorites just because others have picked them.

I think some of you have misunderstood or not read the original posters request properly.

And remember, I'm not ranking episodes...I'm compiling the most important episodes of TNG into a sequential list so he can follow the development of the characters and the series chronologically.

We are trying to choose 25 episodes that compress and sum up the entire run of TNG for a newcomer. Essential TNG. Sam Walters has it pretty much nailed on with his choices, although I wouldn't choose to include "I, Borg."

I'll have a think about it.

I'd also like to see what the OP went with for his 25. :)

OK. An "essential viewing, beginners guide, series in a season". If the OP doesn't mind I've included 26 as that is the average length of a TNG season. It's hurt me to keep some favourites out, but I'll try to explain my reasoning.

I tried to include all the major arcs - The Klingon civil war, Wesley's destiny, Tasha-Sela, the Cardassian and Bajoran arc with it's backstory to DS9, The Borg before they were "humanised" to their detriment in I Borg and Descent. Then I tried to include a character episode for each of the crew and threw in a couple of personal and fan favourites for good measure. I've left out Unification and Relics because, although I enjoy them, they are sentimental links to TOS and I wanted this list to stand on it's own as TNG.

Encounter at Farpoint
Certainly not the strongest beginning by a Trek crew, but introduces us to everyone and the formidable Q. Also included here because I think it's needed in order to assist the series finalé.

Where No One Has Gone Before
Included here because it seems to fit the most character development into the shortest time. Introduces the Traveller and shows how Wes becomes a bridge regular. Included for the first time watcher as it would make no sense to go directly from Yar's introduction in Encounter to her death in...

Skin of Evil
Included to explain Yar's death. An important part of upcoming episodes.

Elementary, Dear Data
I like this one. I know it's not in every fans top 25, and it is full of inconsistancies, but it's quite sentimental for me. It's the first episode I saw as a kid back in the eighties and got me hooked. Introduces the Moriarty character whom I like.

The Measure of a Man
Excellent drama. Riker pitted against his friend because of his duty. Data is recognised as sentient.

Q, Who?
Return of Q. Introduction of the Borg...

Who Watches the Watchers?
Explains the Prime Directive and why it is so important for a Starfleet officer to uphold.

Yesterday's Enterprise
I've always loved "What if's..". Return of Yar, backstory for Sela. Explanation of why Federation had to make peace with the Klingons. The Enterprise "C". The "D" as a warship. So good in so many ways.

Sins of the Father
Worf backstory. Beginning of Klingon arc.

Best of Both Worlds
Nothing to be said. TNG's finest (two) hour(s).

Family
Excellent conclusion to previous episode and it includes some great character development. Nicely shot too.

Reunion
Klingon civil war hots up. Worf goes boldly where no Starfleet officer has gone before by slaying a candidate for succession. We can almost forgive the introduction of Alexander.

The Wounded
Introduction to the Carddies and an episode in which O'Brien got to shine. Good story.

The Drumhead
Excellent commentary on Mcarthy era witch-hunts. And Worf gets sucked up in it. Trek at it's best.

Redemption
Memorable conclusion to the civil war, with the appearance of Tasha's daughter (she was heard, not seen in Mind's Eye). Nice sidestory about Data trying to be accepted as a Captain by his bigoted officer. Shame Worf found it so easy to resign his commission and get it back again. Would have been a nice way to say goodbye to a character (who in my opinion was rarely as good again).

Ensign Ro
Continuation of Cardassian arc and introduction of the Bajorans. Paved the way for the excellent DS9.

The First Duty
So Wes is human afterall. Never liked him until now. Good story about Starfleet principles.

The Inner Light
What might have been for Picard. The Ressikan Flute solo still brings a tear to my eye.

Chain of Command
"There are four lights!" Interesting look at a different Captain on the "D". And we finally get to see Deanna in a uniform, sexy and empowering.

Ship In A Bottle
As said earlier, this is a personal preference of mine and a conclusion to the earlier episode. I can forgive the oversights. Love Moriarty. Love Stephanie Beecham. Love Barclay saying "End program" at the end (how many of us did that too!)

Tapestry
Another "What if?..". Q comes up with the right mix of humour and pathos. Excellent.

Lessons
Oh, poor Jean-Luc, the life of a Starfleet Captain is a lonely one. Lovely conclusion, in some ways, of The Inner Light and an excellent exploration of what it means to devote your life to the Captains chair.

Second Chances
It was between this and Dark page for a Deanna story to show a first time watcher. I plumped for this because I didn't want to include any other Lwaxanna episode in order to explain her character, even though I think both actresses were great in Dark Page. This story has the added benefit of giving some kind of conclusion to the Riker - Troi romance that was begun in Farpoint.

Lower Decks
Such an interesting episode at the time. Told from a unique perspective. Part of the conclusion of The First Duty. I'm so glad they did what they did with the end. Life isn't all happy Hollywood endings...

Journeys End
We say goodbye to Wes and the traveller. Helps set up Voyagers premise.

All Good Things
"Burning the midnight petroleum". Best series finalé to date.

I also have someone I would like to introduce to TNG in a concise manner. But there are just too many 'essential' plot threads, stand out episodes, and defining character shows.
To do justice to Wesley's journey, Data/Lore, Worf's discommendation, Tasha's legacy, the Borg, Q, the Prime Directive, et al, adds up to much more than 20-25 episodes when two parters are tallied in.

So I am going to make the pilot and finale a given, even if EAF is pretty weak, AGT needs it to bookend the series. So Q is a focus, and the other 'reqired' episodes are BOBW I&II. The rest I am going to try to pick for their 'emotional punch'. That is what an average person responds to, not plot machinations of who Duras is sleeping with, or 'Jean-Luc, I have something to tell you...' teases.

25 hours of TNG, (counting two-parters as two hours) this is going to be tough!

1&2 Encounter at Farpoint -feel the pain!
3 11001001 -intro to holodeck, nice character moments, weird aliens, and MINUET!
4 A Matter of Honor -good Klingon and Riker showcase
5 Measure of a Man -sentients rights
6 Q Who -hopeless odds
7 Who Watches the Watchers -non-interference vs. picard as god
8 Yesterday's Enterprise -kicks ass!
9 Sarek -TOS connection, and that mind meld makes me quiver
10 The Best of Both Worlds -the best
11 The Best of Both Worlds II -of course
12 Family -emotional resolution
13 The Drumhead -'I've taken down bigger men than you Picard!'
14 Darmok -learning to communicate
15 The First Duty -'You have a duty to the truth!'
16 The Inner Light -very touching
17 Relics -Scotty is not useless, nice TOS homage
18 Chain of Command -Cox rox!
19 Chain of Command II -there are four lights!!
20 Lessons -nice follow up to Inner Light
21 Lower Decks -good change of p.o.v.
22 Thine Own Self -Data as Frankenstein
23&24 All Good Things... -comes full circle
25 First Contact -wraps up the Borg and Picard story

That was brutal, but it is all gold pressed latinum!!

Upon reflection this list was a little Picard centric, (Stewart was the ace in the hole actor), so I added 1 episode from each season to round things out a little.

Conspiracy -tense, creepy bugs go ka-pow!
The Icarus Factor -Riker's command conundrum, and Worf developement
Deja Q -fun, LOL moments
Data's Day -lots of character bits, the O'Brien wedding, Romulan intrigue
Cause and Effect -cool sci-fi story with the Ent exploding 5 times!
Face of the Enemy -giving Troi the spotlight, and Romulans too
Parallels -Worf and more freaky sci-fi concepts
Generations -despite Kirk's lame demise, good to see the Ent-D on the big screen

Unfortunately there seem to no really stand out Bev or Geordi episodes. Worf's Klingon civil war arc will have to be a seperate installment. Same with Data/Lore arc. Laxwanna is unfortunately M.I.A.. And I would like a few more first contact/ strange new world eps, but TNG didn't really focus on that stuff very much.

So I can live with 27 eps (four are two-parters) and two movies. Best to ignore Insurrection and Nemesis anyway...

Omnirad, the OP said we could count two-parters as one choice. That leaves you with a bit of scope to add to your definitive list. Nice picks. ;)

^^ Oh, good. Because I was thinking I would like to add a 'buisiness as usual' episode from the first season, preferably set on a planet. Too bad 'Justice', "Code of Honor', and 'Home Soil' suck so bad! I would choose either 'Where No One has Gone Before', or prob 'Arsenal of Freedom'.

'Arsenal' has a quick pace, lots of action, and good participation from the whole cast (minus Troi, right?). If Tasha had this kind of participation all the time Denise Crosby would never have left.

Other wise my list doesn't set foot on a planet from EAF until the third season. They really needed to get off that ship more often and meet the natives! But I guess 'business as usual' shows would be kinda boring unless some weird shit happens.

Plus I love the line from AoF "Act now, the early bird gets worms!" (?)

I'm just doing my top 10 in order....

Yesterday's Enterprise
The Best of Both Worlds
All Good Things...
The Drumhead
The Inner Light
Tapestry
First Contact
Lower Decks
Parallels
Cause and Effect
