Thanks for the update. I had been hoping that the Toronto zoo might be on the list. I am pleased that the famous San Diego zoo is on the list. It is on my list of must-go-to places to visit!!
At least it wasn't the majestik møøse.
Four Tasmanian Devils have arrived at San Diego Zoo and will go on display from October 24. Their names are Bradley, Bixby, De-Vos (males), and Usmar (a female).

When I was on R&R leave in August I went to the Norfolk Zoo for the first time. Really nice zoo. The only thing I saw that seemed dangerous was the stupid water feature at the entrance where kids can run around and play. Saw a little boy bust his face wide open when he slipped. Screaming in pain and blood everywhere. Poor kid.
As to the animals. They were all fine and looked well cared for.
My favorite animals are the otters and Red Pandas. I've only seen red pandas at the Norfolk Zoo and the St. Louis Zoo. At Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, IL (near Chicago) has some snow leopards that I absolutely love. I guess one just had some babies recently, saw some pics on the Zoos facebook page.

I have not made up my mind converning zoos yet. On one hand, if they are run correctly, they take care of many endangered animals. On the other hand, in many cases, they are not run correctly.

To be fair, I don't think the Kiwis need a lot of territory. Smaller birds in one of those huge canopy things are probably alright. Waterfowl are probably okay. They usually fly far away due to food. If they are well fed, no issues.
Not all animals need great spaces. It's not always proportional to their sizes.
One of the best enclosures I've ever seen for small critters and birds was the Climatron in St. Louis, though I've not seen it since the mid-80's. It's a huge greenhouse inside a geodesic dome. You wander through it looking at the plants, and exotic birds fly around in it. Once in a while, you might see a pygmy marmoset staring back at you from behind the leaves.
A brand spankin' new "Ripley's Aquarium" just opened in Toronto near the base of the CN Tower. Looking forward to visiting that. The last time we went to an aquarium was while we were in New York. We were walking up and down the boardwalk at Coney Island several years back and came across the New York Aquarium. We were a little dubious because it wasn't much to look at from the outside. We went in anyway and WOW!, it was amazing. Well worth it if you've never been there.
Can't wait to see them... The Albuquerque Biopark has really done some amazing things over the years. I remember when I first went there as a kid, that it was run down and dirty.. Gorillas lived in an indoor inclosure with individual cages (complete with TVs!) and it was just depressing..
Then suddenly a change started to take place... Massive renovations were begun and an emphasis on "natural habitat" was carried out throughout the property.
Today, the Rio Grande Zoo is gorgeous, with expansive habitat paddocks, indoor and outdoor education centers, a train that takes visitors to the nearby Aquarium and Botanic Gardens, and more...
Yes, there are cages... Mostly for the wild cats and smaller bird species, but that stuff is kept at a minimum.
Will be really jazzed to see the Devils when they arrive... We just had a baby elephant be born.. SOOOOO cute!!
