I've been thinking of picking up Nextwave in TPB, but don't really know Ellis's work that well. Would you recommend it?
It's one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's a riot from beginning to end. A South Central LA, TV vandalizing, car-turning over, beating the head in of a truck driver, riot. It doesn't waste time with complex character development or "will they or wont they hook up" gushfests or big mindblowing plots or Silver Age nostalgia field trips. It's about over-the-top action, brilliant gags, and batshit insanity.
The gags are hilarious, but they aren't predictable and come out of no where like sniper shot to the head. That's what makes the humor so refreshing. It's a parody and satire, sure. But it's also an homage to the old style Marvel comics that I love that used to embrace this type of daffiness unapologetically. It's silly, it's geeky, and it's a pure joy for anyone who loved the light-hearted fun that Marvel comics used to be all about. So naturally they axed it after two arcs and put it in a non-canon universe.
This is really the only Warren Ellis work I've ever read, so I'm not that familiar either. He's currently writing some X-Men book, but since I avoid those books like the plague I couldn't tell you if it's good or not.
But seriously, buy both volumes. It will make you a better person and improve your sex life. Well.....maybe not the first one.
If you don't believe me, believe this:
