Wasn't that series already done, like, back in the '50s?The show could be solely in our solar system..
It would based on the 1930 sci-fi vision of our system, all the planets and large moons would have a different native species.
The "space partol" would journey to a new world every week.
If we run out of existing worlds, we'll just discover more new ones.

TMP was more like a Star Trek: The Beginning than anything else. It tells us that there is life out there even if it is only a reflection of us and gives us a reason for going out into space like the monolith did in 2001 a space odessy. This is what Dr Who does well - introduce things and ideas that have no explaination.
I'd like Star Trek Relativity. Following the timeship USS Relativity after Voyager, and Captain Braxton. The first episode could be a two partner with part one being their attempt, and failure to prevent Nero from destroying Vulcan, and part 2 being their desperate attempt to keep the space time continuum together following the event.
Seems like from there you would have a good platform for a star trek series, and a lot of freedom for a writing staff you could cover just about anything. Some in the past, some in the 29th century. Sort of star trek, meets sliders, meets quantum leap.

Here's an idea for a series that could tell a complete story in a short run:
A starship is destroyed in some disaster, leaving the only survivors in a shuttlepod lightyears from anywhere. With pitiful resources, they have to improvise and make their way to a distant communication beacon....
(If the series does well, then in the final ep they reach the beacon and find it destroyed. Tune in next season!)
The good thing about this format is it gives a sense of danger and difficulty without having to be a dystopia. The ship and crew is small, keeping the budget down.

A dozen people in the cramped confines of a damaged runabout, tensions and emotions run high, looking at how people deal with the loss of their friends, home, and life as they knew it. Would be a great character show.
I would say even if it was just a six-episode arch, have them left at the end facing the destroyed relay and their future looking bleak--whose to say that it needs a happy ending?

First of all, they would be more than 40 minutes from rescue.
The journey would take weeks or months. They could still encounter all sorts of species and phenomena, but not having the power of a starship would make them handle situations quite differently. e.g. Suppose a Klingon cruiser decides they are space junk to use for target practice? How would they talk/trick their way out of that?
Or if Ferenghi or Orions tractored the shuttlepod and took it to some combination chop shop and slave trader? They can't beam people in and out, and they can't win in a fire fight. So...
What would they have to do as their supplies ran out? Apart from the usual self-sacrifice, they might need to consider prostitution (for trade) or cannibalism.
Stellar phenomena which wouldn't affect the Enterprise except for some shakey-cam could have devastating effects on a shuttlepod. The crew might suffer radiation poisoning, adding another ticking clock to their mission. Or the hull could be severely compromised, so now our crew is wearing EV suits and travelling with one side of the ship in tatters.

The stories and dialogue needs to be more complex rather than the characters told in a simple way. Starts with action and danger with a high believability factor. Twist endings a la TZ would be a good thing. All aliens must be a reflection of Humans and be Human. No more prosthetics. The audience isn't buying it. Nobody questioned it when TOS did it.
You can't have Trek without aliens, more often than not they are the most interesting characters, as well as being physically different they also have other viewpoints to challenge what humans would consider "normal".
For example alien perspective on homosexuality, euthanasia, etc. to cast light on issues that people either shy away from or have a 'traditional' view upon, looking at them from a totally new perspective (especially one intended to make the topic uncomfortable and thought-provoking).
I'd rather have a cast of Kira, Garak, Tuvok, Phlox and Worf, than one of Archer, Chakotay, Kim, Wesley and Mayweather any day of the week.

A farm boy...a wizard and a pirate go off to rescue the princess from the evil wizard who was the apprentice of the good wizard...(to be changed in a later season)...turns out the farm boy and princess are the twins of the evil wizard seperared at birth to be hidden from him..nah.....

One of the good things about ENT was the advances in makeup - it meant aliens could be more convincingly alien than ever, but at the same time more relatable, as thinner protheses meant they could act more naturally without having to overdo it to get through the mask.
The new look Andorians were amazing, with the fully functional antennae. It made me fall in love with the species, so much so that I'd be thrilled to see one in the next series.
Very true. But I think there is one point 99% of fans can agree too, we want a new TV series. And if the poll elsewhere on the board is to be taken into account a huge majority want to return to the Prime Universe.
Unfortunately, you can't please all the people all the time, so whatever does happen is going to really tick some fans off.
They aren't? Films like Guardians of the Galaxy and the Lord of the Rings say otherwise.
TOS used prosthetics. The Andorians, the Tellarites and the Vulcans all wore various appliances. Other alien species as well.
