Your favourite Trek author & why?

Probably Christopher Bennett. His books pretty much have everything- great worldbuilding, fascinating aliens (...), good character work (...), engaging themes and interlinked subplots, real science, and great continuity.

Yupp, same here. His novels are awesome, if not his online manners. ;-)

Seriously, it's so cool to be conversing with you. I will run out & get your novel! If it sucks, I'll tell ya (but the reviews say I won't have to).:techman:

As long as you're running out to buy all of the books written by the posters here, you might as well pick up my stuff, too. ;)

Though I should warn you that you're going to become very, very broke in a hurry.

It's hard to choose, but my favorite right now is KRAD. I absolutely loved the IKS Gorkon/Klingon series. A Time for War, a Time for Peace, Articles of the Federation, and A Singular Destiny are three of my favorite trek novels. David Mack and Christopher are tied for second after several strong outings from both over the last few years (Mack: A Time to Kill, A Time to Heal, Destiny trilogy, Harbinger // Christopher: Orions Hounds, OaTS, The Buried Age, and Ex Machina).

Honorable mentions go to PAD (i'm a NF kind of guy), Kirsten Beyer (Full Circle was fantastic), and William Leisner for his great debut novel Losing the Peace. Here's hoping Beyer has more Voyager in her future (2011??) and Leisner has more TNG (or anything) in 2011 and beyond :)

Far and away my favorite Trek author is David Mack. Though Sci hit the nail on the head with KRAD being right there too and the Mack/KRAD combo in instances such as A Time to Kill, A Time to Heal, A Time For War a Time For Peace and Destiny and A Singular Destiny are sheer greatness.

Mack, however is the only author thus far who has never ever written a book that I've not liked. His work monopolizes my top ten, and I will buy a book based solely on his name alone. I have in fact bought his Wolverine book and SCE: Wildfire and will be getting The Calling when it appears in KC and next year's Abramsverse book all solely because he wrote them. Where in all of those cases I wouldn't normally have bought or been interested in them.

I haven't read many Trek novels where the author had written more than one, but I'd have to put Diane Duane pretty high up, even though there are elements of her novels I wasn't crazy about. She still gave a ripping back story to Vulcan and Romulus.

I know Diane Carey isn't loved by some readers, but Final Frontier and Best Destiny are among my favorite Trek books. I think she captured Kirk well, and her George Kirk is just what I'd imagine him to be.

I've only read one of her books, but Margaret Wander Bonano's Strangers From the Sky is probably one of my top favorites. Again, good use of continuity without it looking like too much name-dropping.

Also, David R. George III has to be high on my list. I've only read his Crucible trilogy, but the McCoy volume is amazing. It got me back here reading Trek novels after a 20-year hiatus. So I'd probably have to put him on top.

Couldn't pick one, singular. There are a dozen or more, over the years, who I feel guarantee a good read.

Going back a ways here, but mine is Jean Lorrah. Her two Next Gen novels are among my all-time favorite tie-in work.

Scott, I'm hurt that I haven't been invited over for dinner. I mean, what? you can't afford to send me a plane ticket? Loser!

I refuse to choose just one author, so instead I select a tie between S.D. Perry, KRAD, David Mack and the team of Martin & Mangels. I would say that they have been consistently my favorite Trek authors for a while now.

Well, Greg Bear is my SF favorite author and he wrote CORONA so....

Nah. I got nothing. I don't really have a favorite writer. I like stories.

we only get to pick one (or a couple?) yeesh! I've picked up one Trek book in the last decade I couldn't read; it was so awful. The rest made me glad I'd kept my day job. KRAD is King but so many others have given me so much reading pleasure it's impossible to narrow it down to less than a dozen!

Diane Duane.

Has a better handle on the TOS characters than anyone else in the novels, except maybe Vonda McIntyre. Her books bring forth a real sense of wonder in the ST universe (especially The Wounded Sky). She made the Romulans...excuse me, Rihannsu much more interesting than any of the post-TOS series have.

So many. One favorite?...
I suppose my favorite is Peter David. Though that changes when I read something by Mack. I love those huge galaxy spanning stories. I live for them and his are so choice.

I loved A Singular Destiny, the only KRAD novel I've read. Loved it! Must pick up more of that.

Diane Carey, Judith Reeves-Stevens and Garfield Reeves Stevens have to be on that list. I mean, really. Both do the TOS crew better than anyone IMO.

I haven't had a chance to read any Leisner or Chris Bennet stuff yet but, Losing the Peace and Ex Machina are on the short list.

What I'm saying is there can be no one favorite for me with so much good material that has come out since 1988's Spock's World.

Peter David, for getting me into Trek literature with Q-Squared, and keeping me there with the New Frontier series while I abandoned other Trek books.

I don't think any author has managed to capture the same epic feel that he did in one book, even over multiple novels. His humour, though increasingly hit-and-miss, is also very welcome.

I didn't even have to think...easy answer.

Diane Duane.

There's a music and a spirit in her work that I have yet to see matched anywhere else. Honestly, some of her stuff should've been up for a Hugo, and I believe it would've been if tie-ins had been eligible.

(No offense to any of the authors here, of course...you've had a lot of great works as well and I don't diminish that.)
