Your favourite SF weapons and devices...

Here's a chance to gab about our favourite SF weapons and devices. We'll probably focus on things we've seen in film and TV, but if there's something you like from SF literature or comics then feel free to share.

Of course to this day I still love the Star Trek TOS pistol phaser. It was so unlike anything I'd seen in sci-fi before and I'm challenged to think of anything I've seen since that I felt made the same impression...until recently. The TOS phaser is still my all time favourite, but I've come to love the Zat from Stargate SG-1. I just freakin' love the sounds it makes. And it just looks so alien and counterintuitive.

My third pick would be the P90 used by SGC personnel. Good old-fashioned firepower to fight the evils of the galaxy. Never underestimate the effectiveness of a projectile weapon.

Anyone else?

Tricorder. It can scan anything! :bolian:

Communicator and hypospray for ending up being invented for real.

Still waiting on the tricorder. :(

(Which raises a question, doesn't "tri" corder imply it can only scan three types of things?) :rommie:

Sure the Tricorder is the logical thing. It would be very useful.
But I think my favorite would be the CVI/Skrill combo from Earth: Final Conflict. The CVI (CyberViral Implant) gives perfect recall and enhanced cognitive abilities and the Skrill gives a weapon that can with nothing more than a thought emit a blast that can obliterate an room full of enemies, or ruffle the hair of an annoying person. And since the CVI is implanted in the brain and the Skrill is a symbiote that lives on your arm you don't even have to be trained to use them.

And how bout that Stargate! Pretty hypnotic blue blobby waves... I love how the first time, everyone stands in front of it with a worried expression and then tests it by putting their arm through. Wouldn't miss that arm much, huh? :p

I wouldn't try more than a pinky to start out...

And the Borg! Gotta love those little doo-dads. The funky star thing that pops outta your cheek is the best!

Very much agreed. A very cool device.

Agree on the Stargate Zats.

Just about all the Starfleet tech is made of win. Who wouldn't want a replicator in their house?

the p90's hardly an SF weapon and device when they're a real gun...

Variable Threat Response Battle Suit aka War Machine armour from IM2

Light sabre

TNG Phaser pistol

BB/TDK Batmobile aka Tumbler

One of Perry Rhodan's Transform cannons, instant death at 6000 Gigaton TNT:evil: Give me an Ultra Carrier Battleship from the same universe and I've got 60 of them.. Deathstars are for the weak... :p

A Colonial pistol from original BSG. God, I thought those things were the s***! when I was a kid...

The powered armor from Heinlein's "Starship Troopers"

It seems like the armor in the computer game Starcraft are the best representation of it I've seen.

A-gates from Glasshouse and Accelerando.

Space elevators from 3001, as well as Fountains of Paradise (which I have not, regrettably, read yet).

Solar power satellites from High Frontier (not really science fiction, more just science, but with a speculative bent).

He-3 fusion from Moon.

Noocytes from Blood Music.

And, of course, sexbots in all their myriad forms, including the holodeck.
