backstepts What kind of phone do you have?-thread had me wondering what kind of programs ("apps") people have on their 'smart phones', especially the ones used daily and/or liked the best.

My primary screen.​

*On my N900 I

the TouchSearch-widget; being able to add searches on my own I have found especially useful.

Amongst other things I have added Beer advocate, Memory Alpha, Danish and German Wikipedia, Danish Google, a couple of Danish dictionaries... and of course the TrekBBS

*Free42 is something as brilliant as a RPN calculator (based on the HP 42S) which reminds me of my old HP 41-CX -so nice to use

*Recaller is a one-touch records all widget -very useful! I mostly use it to record certain calls on the phone).

Oh, yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Okuda Theme, but I do use the sound-theme with Trek-computer sounds

I am -furthermore- looking forward to playing with FCamera

I don't have a smartphone, but I do have an iPad. Here's my favorite apps:

- MLB.com At Bat '11. You know why.

- Weather Channel

- Solitaire

- Kindle books

- Tetris

- 1Password for iPad

- Calculator XL

- YouVersion Bible

My favorites (on my Samsung Intercept, Android-based phone):

* SMS Popup. Lets me text people with a minimum of fuss AND roundfile texts from people I don't want to hear from.
* Angband. MUST HAVE ANGBAND.
* Dice Bag. For people like me who are too cheap to buy real D10s.
* Minecraft Canary. Minecraft information on my phone. Yes.
* Terminal emulator. Sometimes I need to admin my servers remotely, you know...
* Tricorder. Duh.

A lot of this is going to be Android specific, but...

• Awesome Drop - drag and drop files into any HTML5 browser, instantly copies over to the phone.
• Dropbox - for accessing, well, Dropbox!
• Pulse - nifty RSS reader
• LauncherPro - My favorite launcher replacement
• Sleep as an Droid - so I have scientific proof of how poorly I slept
• Catch Notes - easy note taking with web syncing
• Beautiful Widgets/Fancy Widget - I own both and switch back and forth depending on my mood for my homescreen weather needs

I try to keep my homescreens simple and organized, here is my current 5-screen setup (center is default):

If you don't have it on both your smartphone and installed on all your computers then you're not really serious about this whole 'smartphone' thing.

Also, if you have an iPhone I strongly suggest Dialvetica as a cool new way to call people from your address book. I replaced the 'Phone' icon on my dock with it.

• Facebook
• MyStuff - Use this to keep my book inventory with me at all times. Helps to keep me from buying books I already have.
• Napster - I finally caved and upped my subscription so I could listen on my phone. It's teh awesome.
• Audible - Been a member for a while now, use it all the time to stream audio books.
• Netflix
• Hulu Plus - Took the plunge here too because I bought a Roku. Now Hulu just needs to get on the ball adding content available on devices other than a computer. Half the stuff I'm subscribed to is "Web Only" content.
• IMDB - SO nice to be able to look up guest stars on the fly.
• YouTube
• Pogo Plug - They REALLY need to get cracking on improving this app. Once they get it together, it's going to be amazing to be able to stream all my external hard drive content from home to my phone.
• Dropbox, of course

That's most of what I use on a regular basis, though I have a ton of other "gadgety" apps that get used for specific purposes once in a while.

Aside from Dropbox, my favorite iPhone apps right now are:

Hipstamatic, which hipsterizes your photos.
Site to Phone, which gives you a 1-click option in your browser to send a link to your phone for use later.
I also like my local happy hours app and an app that searches Beer Advocate reviews.

This one is pretty cool, too, though I dont need it personally; mostly I like the creative and useful use of the available data.

Using the city data, Schaffer and Frederick created a web application that allows a user to type in an address and then learn the probability of getting a ticket there. The website can tell you the worst day of the week to park on any given block, as well as the cost of the average citation for parking violations and from red-light and speed cameras.

I have those in my TouchSearch.

As I normally just google stuff and then sometimes use one of the YouTube results, I had forgotten that I already had YT though. Immediately after reading your post I began adding it only to get a message saying "YouTube already exists" -I do that a lot: add things only to find out that I already have them, not only searches, also apps

I also like the way I can synchronize Firefox from my home system to my portable; tabs and bookmarks from home always in my pocket as well

If only Firefox wasn't such a resource-hog -and while it probably isn't a great big problem to do so I don't like overclocking the device.

At least with Android, many apps are free, and the ones you pay for are usually cheap ($1-5.) You pay once and Google remembers that you bought it--the apps are tied to your Google account.

Some attract a fee for more advanced features - so for example, I pay for evernote premium so I can have off-line notebooks and be able to drag and drop pdfs and other files into notes.

Livestation - live streaming of Al Jazeera English, NASA TV and other international news channels
DirecTV - schedule DVR recordings from anywhere

Jailbreak stuff:
Auto3G - automatically switch to EDGE when phone is locked to save battery
BiteSMS - send text replies within notification popups
iFile - file manager for iDevices
Signal - shows location and signal info for connected and visible cell towers

You pay once and Google remembers that you bought it--the apps are tied to your Google account.

AFAIK, that's also how it works for apps bought via the iTunes Store (and the Mac App Store).

The vast majority of apps are either free, or have a free version to tempt you into trying the pay version. And MOST apps are under $5. The YouTube app comes loaded on the iPhone. The popular ones (Twitter, Facebook, Pandora, etc.) are all free. Even the apps for services you pay for (Netflix, Hulu Plus) are free.

I paid for my Bible app, but it has a free version, and there are lots of free Bible apps out there. And the MyStuff app has a limited free version, but if you're going to use it at all, you need to buy the full. Almost all of my apps were free, though, and I have (takes a minute to count) OH MY STARS - 140!!! I think I need to do some pruning!!!
