So I've been listening to a lot of Van Halen the past week or so and while I'm a fan of the original era, I can see a lot of merit in the Sammy Hagar era. I can't say the same thing for Gary Cherone though. What's your favorite and why?

lol, I wouldn't call Gary Charone an "era", more like a moment.

If you put a gun to my head, I would probably say Dave. The songs were a little harder and definitely more fun. That said, the stuff with Sammy is musically superior, and they put on a much better live show with him. "Dreams" is my all time favorite VH song.

Diamond Dave, for sure. The Hagar era has a lot of great songs, I'm not one of those who think Van Hagar sucks or anything, and I don't begrudge him or his talent...but they certainly lost an edge that I enjoyed after Dave left.

And I think in recent years it's been shown that the Van Halen's were most likely the assholes all these years, and not the singers.

Dave, Eddie, Mike, Alex. ( I saw them in 1979 at the old Memorial Area in Victoria, or was it '78?? )
But when they started to use the Syntesizer they dropped a bit.
I would like to see them with Wolfgang, I missed out the last time.
Van-Hagar was palitable but the other guy sucked

This is pretty much how I feel, too.

Agreed.
I trying to find the name of a song Sammy did Pre Van- halen that contained the lyrics "Sweat Box Suzie" (sp)??
late 70's

The David Lee Roth version only please.

I still can't believe there is no killer concert DVD for the old VH. Pretty much every major band has one. I find it hard to believe that no one thought "hey, we should video one of these shows!" I'd like to believe it exists, but is just hung up somewhere in a bunch of red tape. Maybe someday.

Oh one exists. Eddie is probably working hard right now on digitally removing Michael Anthony and inserting Wolfgang.

VH up to 1984. Van Hagar was pretty good, but it didn't sound the same, or frankly, any different that Sammy Hagar on his own. After that... there was an after that?

Jump and Unchained were pretty good songs. Eddie is a great guitar player.

That's about the extent of my Van Halen fandom.

I like some of their stuff, but I've always thought Van Halen was (along with Aerosmith) one of the most overrated bands of all time. You're going to tell me that Van Halen is in the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame while Alice Cooper, Rush, the Moody Blues, Status Quo and at least a dozen other bands with far more worthy credentials are on the outside looking in? Then, of course, this is the Crock 'N Bull Hall of Shame we're talking about here.

That said, the Hagar era is musically superior to the Roth era, while lacking the former's sheer raw energy.

As a guitar player, Eddie Van Halen has done as much for the art as anyone. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame and any other accolades he can get.

Crock 'N Bull Hall of Shame, is correct look who they've put in latley
Maddona, the Dead freak MJ :wtf: is up with that shit?
Mojo Nixon was right in his rant about the Rock'n'Roll hall of Shame.

I'd have to pretty much agree with all of this - though I suspect that there was enough assholery to go round them all.
