Makes me wonder if that is what alot of people in the UK really live off of, and only pretend to like things like blood pudding or haggis, just to gross us Yanks out.

I can't speak for the rest of the UK, but in Scotland it would appear to be fish suppers and curry - probably why we're the "fat man of Europe."

And vegetarian haggis isn't gross - just a sausage made of oats and pulses and spices. The regular one I'll agree, but then I don't eat meat.

Ah! Now this is quite interesting! This is the first I am hearing about vegetarian haggis. Now that, I would be willing to eat, I think. I will have to try that the next time I am in Scotland - thanks for the tip! One of my chief difficulties in the UK is with any meat product that is tubular - any kind of sausage, hot dog, etc. The texture of your tubular meats is just VERY 'off' from ours...and it just doesn't set right with me. But maybe a veggie version might work better...because I wouldn't be expecting it to feel one way and then turn out quite differently.

And by the way, I do LOVE Scotland - such a beautiful part of the UK. And although this might sound odd to you, the climate is right up my alley - I much prefer cold to intense heat and/or humidity, and Scotland seems to suit me. I have been there in the months of June, October and November, and all seemed quite fine to me.

And since I am a huge fan of Scotch whiskey...well...you can imagine that I would have a nice time there. Plenty to spend money on, anyway. And you never go into a bar where they tell you that the only thing they have is Johnnie Walker Red (I like Black okay for common use...but Red, to me, is rather foul).

One of the things I have always wanted to do is make a trip to Scotland during the month of August and attend that Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Perhaps it might sound touristy to you, but I have seen bits of it on TV several times and have always thought it would be wonderful to attend. You know we Yanks just CANNOT get enough of that whole bagpipes and kilts thing, anyway...and in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle....well, I really want to see that some day! That event has been on my bucket list for about 15 years now. I really need to make the effort and get there for that some day soon.

Thai curry and (the majority of) Indian curry are massively different. Thai curry is merely OK if there's nothing else, but lots of Indian curries are great. Actually, what you get in the UK isn't really Indian curry a lot of the time. Some of it is, but lots of it is very Bangladeshi influenced and lots again is quite Anglicised by turning drier curries into creamier ones (eg Chicken Tikka Masala).

Hm. Might have to look some of that up; a not insignificant South Asian presence around here, but usually people I'm with don't wanna try it.

However, not to put too fine a point on it, but I've 'sampled' two of the kind to which you are referring that were of 'British origin'...and they were the same as those made in the USA.

In fact, now that I think of it...they were actually quite a bit better.

The only time I have ever been out of the USA is when the family went to Mexico for my brother's wedding. It was nice (although we saw very little of Mexico proper - we stayed at a resort the whole week, and the only time we ever went into an actual town was for the reception, in Playa del Carmen), but there was one thing that I could have done without:

Timeshares.

We didn't actually go to one, but literally as soon as we landed at Cancun airport we were SURROUNDED (also literally) by throngs of people demanding that we buy timeshares. I swear they never let up until we left the airport. Bloody bastards.

Even when I used to eat meat, sausage wasn't something I was a big fan of, other than Vienna Beef hot dogs. The texture and all that.

Wicken Fen veggie sausages are my favourite.

It could rain a bit less, but I'm also a big fan of the weather here - very similar to parts of San Francisco: year round jacket weather. Made it easier to adjust to the climate; especially since Oakland gets a lot hotter than I'd like. It does occasionally get warm enough in Glasgow that I wish I had aircon in the car, though.

And since I am a huge fan of Scotch whiskey...well...you can imagine that I would have a nice time there.

Not a drinker, which invariably raises the question of whether I moved to the right country!

I was wondering how he decided the matches during the first round. Random? Also, there are a lot of countries left out. There was a qualification round we know nothing about? We demand transparency!

I know I need to visit your country, but I can say they share some commonalities with Americans. A bit of an independent and rugged streak in the national character.

I've been there although I didn't really have much interest in it. Friends of mine really wanted to see it and they decided to do a two couples trip to Scotland, travelling the west coast before attenting it. However, one of my friends broke up with his girlfriend but didn't want to go alone so he asked me.
The Military Tattoo doesn't have as much bagpipes and kilts as you might expect, though. It's a military music festival and bands from other countries also take part. It was a bit too militaristic for my taste, to be honest. Some British soldiers even did a bit about how to rescue wounded comrades in Afghanistan. It was also rather cold, it's quite windy up there, so if you go, dress accordingly.
At the end of the thing we were asked to sing the national anthem and I really wanted to but no one around me did. Quite an odd moment. Serves me right for borrowing someone else's patriotic rituals, I guess.
