"Your a droid ,and I'm annoyed"

and in that scene later when Data was telling jokes and nobody was laughing, some of those were pretty funny

or was that the scene before ... been ages since I've seen that episode

Completely agree with the poster above me.

If it weren't for those Data scenes, though, that episode was just terrible. Like some sick space-set parody of Romeo and Juliet. :angryrazz:

That was the silly The Outrageous Okona, yes? With Joe Piscopo as the holographic comic. Yikes, dreadful ep!

And, amazing, the joke in the original script was even worse:

"Whoa, slow down. Now Data, there's just you and me here and nobody is going to know what we talked about. My job here places me under some obligations, like a vow of secrecy. I can't repeat anything I hear or see. Now the obligation of the patron is to tell the truth, otherwise I'm being placed under a commitment to keep a secret about "nothing." That's not fair. It's called wasted honor. You understand?"

Wait, was that even a joke?

bad episode, and I love when the writers do this thing where they have a character tell Data that something IS funny when it's not, and then Data does or says something funny, but it's not "supposed" to be funny.

the best example is Generations, where we're all supposed to laugh at Riker's mean-spirited prank on Worf, but we're supposed to cringe when Dr. Crusher, who RICHLY DESERVED it, gets pushed in the water by Data.

no wonder Data had a hard time grasping humor, he had terrible teachers.

I didn't say it was funnier, I just liked it. An episode like "Okona," you take what you can get in terms of enjoyment.

ah yes, I re-read your first post and you are indeed correct that you made no mention of your preferred version actually being funnier. I apologize.

I liked the Agony Booth's theory that she was actually saying "You're a droid, and I'm a noid," as in, one of the little aliens who delay pizza delivery.

Well, that's basically the essence of the pun, but with 'noid as short for humanoid. Though the image of Guinan holding up my pizza is still funnier.

Either way, I think I had seen the episode 5-6 times before I actually understood the joke. I can't see a joke at all in the 'original script' excerpt posted above though...?

You have to keep in mind that Guinan was on Earth a long, long time ago. I'm sure that joke would have had them all rolling in the aisles back in the day.

And who's idea was it to have Piscopo represent a great comedian of the past? The guy barely ever raised me a chuckle.

That's the way I always understood it.

It's not, "You're a 'droid, and I'm annoyed."

It's, "You're a 'droid, and I'm a 'noid."

Humanoid.

But either way, punny, not funny.

But puns are widely accepted as humorous, even though I rarely find them funny.

I recall a study a few years back, where they were looking for the funniest joke in the world. Which is no mean feat, considering how different cultures find different things funny (puns, slapstick, scatological humor, etc.). They determined that the following joke (which is based on a play on words) would be considered funny/amusing in the greatest number of cultures involved in the study:

Q: What's brown and sticky?

A: A stick.

(I always text that one in at the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor attraction at Disney World, where the pre-show asks you to send them jokes which they may use in the show. Kids seem to love it, because it heads toward being a poop joke, then takes a left turn.)

Humor is subjective, so please don't say it like it's a fact. ;)
I for one did like the prank on Worf, and cringed at the other one.
