The current one is the first one who can use the scarab's full powers. In the comics, the technology is on such an advanced level that they are able to provide a defense and offense against magic.

The creators of the scarab are an Alien empire called the Reach who have tangled and won against the Green Lantern Corps. The scarabs are their infiltrators and fifth columnists.

Presumably this will play a part in Invasion.

The scarab is also apparently powerful enough to have "potential theological implications" in the comics.

Not sure how much of a role its origin will play but certainly the Kroloteans recognized it and bugged the hell out.

It speaks in an alien font when it was a Reach Infiltrator. The use of the semi-legible alien English is to show its transition to Jaime's ally.

Besides, you shouldn't taunt the cosmically powerful alien superweapon. It's just tacky.

In-story rationalizations don't help much if the audience has trouble reading the text.

You aren't suppose to read the text. That was the whole point in the beginning. It was just alien text in the background that you couldn't decipher until it gradually started resembling English.

That was the entire point. To show the scarab's development of individuality and rejecting what he was created for.

In the panel Kestrel posted above, it was definitely meant to be legible. You wouldn't get the joke in "Option 3" if you couldn't read the text. But making it hard to decipher weakens the impact of the gag.

The events of the comic happens clearly after the Reach stuff.

^That's beside the point. I'm not talking about story content, I'm talking about a purely technical issue of the letterer's choice of font. Too many comics letterers these days seem to put flashiness over legibility.

While I got what they were doing with the scarab's "speech", I liked it better when we would only read Jaime's responses - I thought it was funnier most of the time.

Even before that scan, it was revealed that the Scarab had a weapon which could take on the Spectre, aka the Angel of Death.

So, random, but I was reading Greg Weisman's responses to fan questions over at his "Ask Greg" site and, well...

So we get some exposition on what's happened in the last 5 years this episode.

I haven't been too impressed by the first two eps of the season--I'm not a very big fan of the Kroloteans. Also today's episode was slow and didn't have very many good character scenes or interesting revelations. The only part I did like was the idea that Miss Martian saved Gar's life and that was what resulted in his green appearance and shape shifting abilities.

Yeah, these aliens hardly seem menacing.

And geez, Superboy, did you have to vandalize the Rann train door. Open...not rip off. No wonder they hate Earthlings.

No a whole lot happened, some talk about what happened in the previous 5 years. And Rattar-O got taken down. How come the cat civilians had such big ears? Oh, yeah...wrong show...

Confirmation on Superboy's condition. Is it different from the comic? I don't remember any mention of him still aging on the "inside".

If you have read his proposal for a Roswell/X-Files type animated show on his site, then it's clear a lot of the stuff in Invasion are probably influenced from his earlier ideas.

The particular idea of not aging externally is a trait that a bunch of alien vampires have in that show.

The Kroloteans are probably the scouts of an alien alliance that also includes Rannians.

It would be cool if this were based on the old Invasion:Earth. They could bring in the Dominators maybe substitute the Rannians for the Daxamites.

Actually this was discussed in the old Young Justice comic book series. It was suggested even then that Connor might not age like everyone else. In fact, I asked this very question last week. It looks like they are in sync with the old DC continuity.
