Young Indiana Jones Bookends pulled?

TransporterBeam

Lieutenant Commander
How come the opening and closing shots of an old Indiana Jones are not in the new young Indiana Jones DVDs ? I picked up Volumes 1 and 2 last week. the opening shots of Young 20something Indiana talking over the breakfast table with his father were not in the movie. They weren't in some of the other dvds also. Have they all been taken out? They added charm to the movies.
Not having them in

Yes Lucas had Old Indy pulled. There were some threads about each of the first two volumes being released. For vol.1 especially we had some discussion on that. I didn't follow the whole thread and maybe someone else can come in with a reminder but Lucas as "remastred" the TV series like he did Special Editions of his SW movies.

He wants old Indy out, probably something to do with image and he doesn't want to taint Crystal Skull sequels with the idea of a "one eyed" Indy loomin on the horizon.

Sadly, the bookends being pulled is the reason I don't want to buy the sets. They simply feel incomplete in a similar fashion to the music in "Quantum Leap" being replaced. If I'm buying a DVD of a TV show, I want the content of the show itself to be accurate to what aired. Minor stuff like redoing the Lucasfilm logo don't bother me, but removal of whole scenes does.

Lucas never wanted the Old Indy bookends in the first place; they were forced on him by the network. Indeed, they were dropped after the first season or two, with later episodes being debuted on TV the way Lucas had wanted from the beginning, as 2-hour blocks with no present-day frames (although The Mystery of the Blues did have a frame sequence with Harrison Ford as Indy in the early '50s).

I think Lucas has the right to restore the episodes to the way he originally intended them, but I think the Old Indy frames should've been included on the DVD set as deleted scenes, simply for the sake of thoroughness.

I did not know that about Quantum Leap and I had planned to get those at some point. Copyright issues??

They should just have included the bookends as branch versions of the episodes so that you could watch them whichever way you wanted.

Personally, I thought that they added something.

I never saw the complete series but of the ones I did I liked the old Indy segments. I agree they should've included them as extras or as easter eggs on the DVD's

Yes. Copyright issues for music is still a big debate right now. We're just not finally getting the first season of Crossing Jordan on DVD, and I don't think Cold Case will ever see the light of day.

WKRP in Cincinnati has been badly mangled on DVD due to the distributor's unwillingness to pay for music clearances. Since that show was set at a rock-music radio station, the songs were often quite integral to the scenes, sometimes with characters singing along or saying things that related to the songs, so a lot of scenes had to be cut entirely rather than just redubbed with generic music as is usually the case.

I've longs since been against "Big Music" and their greedy needs. These issues really take the cake as they are holding up and causing issues with my preferred medium of TV and Movies.

Christopher, I agree. If the "Old Indy" bookends had been there as deleted scenes or scenes you could watch as part or separate from the episodes themselves, I'd own the boxed sets already. Their complete absence is just a bit jarring for me.

Captain, I believe it was copyright issues re: QL. The music added so much to the show if you consider it was about time traveling in the "real world" of our past that I felt it lost a lot without the "right" music in its place.

I didn't know that Lucas never wanted the bookends, but to me they really added something. I remember the first one with Old Indy in the museum. There's this part where he is about to tell the story to the kids, and he has a moment where he kinda does a "Hmph" and thinks a bit first. It added weight to the story he was about to tell because you felt that this was a great man about to tell a great tale. The part with him sliding down the banister at the end was charming and showed Indy still had some of that old spirit in him despite his age. Without those, the eps would just seem very different to me.

You can lump "The Wonder Years" in that as well...

Blame the original producers, not Big Music. Sometimes they buy the rights for first and second network broadcast only. This was especially true before VHS and DVD collections.

Personally, were I a producer, I'd rather have the music for only two showings and have a great episode, than pay for full distribution with lesser songs.

I just got the Vol. 1 dvds...my son and I have enjoyed them! I didn't even know about the 'bookends' so didn't miss them.

Is Vol. 2 just more episodes? Are they 10 yr old Indy or 17 year old Indy? I really miss the actor that played Indy's father in the Indy is 17 movies.

What about Vol 3? Hasn't that one just been released?

Music copyright issues also messed up the dvd releases for "Tour of Duty" where the music plays a vital role in setting atmosphere and it's also pretty much put the kibosh on future season releases beyond season one for "American Dreams", another show where music plays a vital part in setting mood and atmosphere.

Personally, I liked the "Old Indy" bookends, but I can see from a creative point of view why Lucas doesn't want them. However, as others have stated, it wouldn't have hurt to have included them as deleted or extra scenes.

Off-Topic Slightly: I read that Lucas intended these DVDs to be something to be played in high school history classes as instructional aids, hence all the big documentaries. But I just started watching this (Vol2) and I just saw an episode (Mata Hari) that was basically a soft-core porno. It was Indy screwing this woman the whole episode, with tons of scantily clad shots of her where you barely see her breasts. And there is one clear shot of a woman's breasts!

Well, THAT episode would be for Health Ed, obviously. ;)

Hey, it's high school. When we covered Romeo & Juliet in 10th-grade English, we were shown the Zeffirelli movie version complete with Olivia Hussey's nude scene. And I think in 9th grade we were shown Clash of the Titans, which has a couple of topless scenes early on. That sort of thing is considered more acceptable when it's artistic or educational.

Anyone notice how poorly these DVDs are edited? The openings and transitions are really weird. The openings on a lot of the episodes are really awkward. There's one transition where there's almost no explanation what's going on. It's like they're in one place and then the next scene, they're in Africa!!!

My mom loves the show and wanted to borrow them...even she said there's something wrong. She like the Old Indy segments too.

And THEN...anyone notice some of the REALLY bad VHS footage they use in a few parts? I think in the India one, they show some footage of a boat going down the Ganges. It is HORRIBLE. Looks like amateur shot video. How did this get into a Lucas production release?!?!?!? The man's standards have fallen!!!
