You vs U

I'm afraid to say that the term 'LOL' is like nails on a chalk board for me.
Same with me, whenever I see "lol" it makes me think the person is a brainless teenage girl and they need to be euthanized for the good of future society.

ROFL is acceptable though.

I actually don't mind when people do this. I find it saves me a great deal of time, as I then know that I do not have to read whatever it is they wrote.
My sentiments exactly.

And I also do confess to being a grammar nazi. Granted, one that doesn't get too riled up by what I see on teh interweb as it would be another waste of time and energy, but a grammar nazi at heart nonetheless. :D

Also the younger set uses this with no problem....not even a question....

I have a problem with it. It particularly annoys me that my father does it.

Well you are the exception and not the rule.

Why is ROFL OK and LOL isn't? Makes no sense. I understand we all have pet peeves...this is not one of mine.

But I don't think others who misspell or abbreviate should be judged so harshly. I know I've misspelled simple words and used incorrect grammar right and left. I actually misspell grammar often (LOL) I always think it's with an e. People have called me dumb because of it. I'm secure enough with my intelligence that I can write it off...but a lot of others are not and I think it's a waste of time going around correcting people...I mean shit that's all you'd be doing then. So anybody that makes spelling or grammar an issue with me better watch out as I take no shorts in this department. But I do want to say thanks to being ridiculed on this board about the word: "grammar" because now I've finally remembered how to spell it...so thanks everybody that berated me and called me dumb! :techman:

What is incredibly annoying...okay, more than annoying...is seeing someone have the ability to type out a longish sentence and yet need to replace 'two' or 'to' or 'too' with '2'. If you could type all those other words, you idiot...

Another one I see now is: some1.

I dont text. I don't understand the appeal of it at all. I'll either call the person or not.

The appeal, for me, is that a text can be used for much shorter messages or just to ask a simple question. It's also less intrusive if, say, the other person is at work or in the middle of something else and can't answer their phone. I don't use it for all-out conversations.

Typical text conversations for me are usually something like this:

Me: "Wanna do something after work today?"
Friend: "Sure, I'll call you when I'm off."

Great thread! I'm a grammar nazi and former GED writing skills instructor. However, I do write sentence fragments and start sentences with "and" on-line, because I'm writing more as I would speak. Like this.

Someone upthread (I just saw that word for the first time yesterday; I like it.) referred to not catching grammatical errors that they make. Proofread, proofread, proofread.

Well yeah, but this is an internet forum not a writing competition, I have two kids and about five seconds to write a reply. I proofread what I can :)

Because ROFL led to ROFLCOPTER and that's such an absurd acronym that I can't help but admire it, but for some reason whenever I see LOL it makes the person seem ditsy in an annoying way. I have no idea why.

:scream:

I did that on purpose...that LOL there for ya...oh I did it again didn't I???? I'm lauging out loud at the moment! I know what ROFL is but what's the copter part?

Yeah that's what I mean...OK I won't be usin' that one....ever. Simply because me and my big mouth would never just say QFT...oh noooooooooo of course I'd have to elaborate.

Why don't my smilies pop up...? I can't use them all the time... they're not here and I need to emote dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never heard of ROFLCOPTER.

I've heard of it but never really knew where it came from. Just looked it up---the best explanation I saw was "Roll On Floor Laughing, Can't Operate Properly Till Eyes Refocus".

Plus there was this gem...
Captain Sloloman of the elite omega roflcopter squad enjoyed a fresh ZOMGBBQPIZZA and a cool lolmonade after his swift victory over the lollerbladers, lmaoplanes and outlawls and returning safely to the lolapalooza.

I have never heard of ROFLCOPTER.
