YOU!!! Great Bird

If Paramount had an open call, right now, for the next "Great Bird of The Galaxy" and you got the job...what would you do with the STAR TREK TV FRANCHISE.

We all like to beat-up on Rick Berman on this site. As time has passed, I am easing on my bashing of the guy. But some of it he, and Braga, do deserve the jabs.

So now its time for US to say what we would do with the TV franchise. So give an idea, and see if 80% of us agree it would be good..heck...on this site? 40% might be a success!!!

DONT FORGET THE FAN FIC SECTION..check out Project Naisannce, Exodus or the Quarter Deck Breed...and all the other great FAN FIC trek stories...NOW!!!

If I was offered the job? I turned it down. It's not worth dealing with pissy, whiny fans.

If I took the job: Freeze 'Trek for one year, maybe eighteen months, and I mean everything to do with the franchise. I'd pull in representatives from the novels, the comics, the past shows, and the movies, and come up with a unified "history" for the franchise and say "this is how it happened, sucks to be you if you don't like it, but this is the way it officially is. Then I create a multimedia crossover event (games, books, comics, TV, and movies) that would relaunch the franchise and take it in a new direction based on the new "canon".

I'm moving this to Future of Trek

My Trek series would be similar to The Next Generation, in it's episodic format, but with a few key differences.

* The ship would not be the Enterprise, or anything like it. In fact, the ship and crew would not even be the cream of the crop officers. It would be an older design of ship, still capable, but showing her age. Likewise, the crew would be talented, but not top of the class at the academy material. My goal would be to make the audience identify more with the characters.

* No reset button. If a character is killed in a certain episode, they stay dead. I'd be a bit like Joss Whedon in that respect, of being willing to kill off main or supporting but popular characters to show the situation is dangerous, rather then poor Ensign Ricky from security.

* Practical uniform and prop designs. One reason I liked Enterprise was because of the designs of the uniforms and the props. The phase pistols looked like weapons, and had an ergonomic design to them. Also, the uniforms, reminiscent of US Navy submariner jumpsuits and NASA Flightsuits, seemed more practical then the pajamas of TNG.

* Along these lines, I'd have different uniforms for NCOs and Officers, as well as one of the main characters being the ships Master Chief Petty Officer, (Chief of the Boat). Also, the security staff would be schooled in unarmed combat for much cooler fight scenes.

* I'd include a homosexual character. Not just a background character we see in one episode, but a member of the main cast. It's been in many of the novels, and been done on Buffy, I don't see why it couldn't happen in Trek.

* If it's economically feasible, I'd like to include a CGI character as well. I'd include a Caitian character who would be played on set by an actress in a motion capture suit.

* I'd like to be able to combine the grittiness of DS9 with the optimism of TNG. I'd show the dark side of the Federation, self serving politicians, Admirals who, while not necessarily evil, are antagonistic to the crew. But I'd also show the one's whp stand by the federations principals.

* Any time-travel episodes would not conveniantly end up in early 21st century earth. I'd have any episodes featuring time travel be set in different time periods. One idea might be the crew, thanks to a malfunction, slingshot back in time to the start of WW3, and inadvertently being the cause of it.

I've actually done this... and have submitted a proposal, which though not BOUGHT, also hasn't been formally rejected yet (which would be what happens if they were totally uninterested).

Basically, what I'd do is take certain elements of the Trek universe which have always been portrayed in a particular fashion and "turn them on their ear" so to speak... the advent of sentient AI, the predominance of transporters and replicators throughout the society (both of which are RIFE with potential dangers which have, to date, been ignored)... and the sense that the 24th-century Federation eventually started to taken on that "fascist" feel... like a Hitlerian "utopia" propaganda film.

I'd respect everything that had come before, but look at certain elements from totally different perspectives... and I'd actually create REAL RISK and REAL CHANGE.

In the end, I'd conclude the series by showing real, serious and PERMANENT consequences to the events of the series, and have a situation more reflective of our current reality (ie, less "utopian" and more "real" with more parallels to allow for more meaningful storytelling from the standpoint of today's humanity). And with a much greater focus on HUMANITY with less on TECHNOLOGY.

That's what I'd do... and it's still what I hope I WILL get to do. ;-)

I actually like most of what you just said. I agree with SHATNER and others that as the show becomes to dependent on gadgets it loses its ability to be accessable to the viewing pubic. Good idea!

I say why screw with a winner.

I'd go back to the original original concept. Before Kirk. I think the concept is pretty sound, and really most of the objections the studio had at that point aren't true anymore. Really, audiences can't accept a woman in charge? Hillary anyone? Not enough action? CSI, House, etc.

So dust off the first version of the show notes, hire a bunch of stellar writers, and go to town. I'd deal with more contemporary issues -- terrorism, health care, environmental stuff, and more realistic scifi stuff like nanobots and AI. Another thing, aliens will be weird again -- no more Californias with latex foreheads. They could be millions of years ahead of us, they might be so far ahead that they might not even consider us sapient at all. Space itself should be dangerous -- not in the particle of the week way, but ion storms, asteroids, nebulas of hydrogen that could blow up a ship with a single spark of static electricity. Nanobots that try to use the ship as spare parts. Who knows -- space is a big place.

I'd bring out a new DS9 Trek Film, it would have the Dominion in it, the Breen, the Tholians and the Borg, the film would be mainly set on DS9 but also on board a Federation Starship, the film would be the launch platform for a brand new Trek series based on the Starship and the new series would be the ship exploring the Alpha Quadrant.

Following the initial film I'd bring out a huge array of merchandise for sale at the cinemas and in preperation for the new series.

The new film and series will be far different than what we're used to and would be less liberal in the way people talk and would be more 'natural' to how we'd speak today in order to appeal to todays audience.

Dude, I am with you!!! DS9 movie was set up great with how they ended WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND. And so much time has passed, just rounding up the whole crew would be fun to do!!!

the new series would be the ship exploring the Alpha Quadrant.

Do you mean gamma quadrant? I have a concept similar to that. It's called Gamma Force over in the fan fiction section. Take a look, maybe we could throw ideas back and forth.

Oh, and just so the admins know, I'm not intending to advertise, just sharing ideas, and pointing them there is the easiest way to do it.

Do you mean gamma quadrant?

No I mean what I said, the Alpha Quadrant. The DS9 film would be set in the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants but the series that follows (with the starship) will be set on exploring the Alpha Quadrant. The Feds, Cardassians, Breen and Tholians etc only make up about 5% of the entire Alpha Quadrant, there's so much of the Alpha Quadrant still unexplored that there's more than enough opportunity for a new series based on exploring it, plus we can find plenty of new enemies and friends in the Federations backyard without having to swan off to another Quadrant. Since DS9 is in Deep Space and on the outskirts of Federation space it makes sense for a Starship to set off from there on an exploration mission out into the Alpha Quadrant.
At the end of the DS9 Film there will be a scene where the Captain of the Starship receives a subspace message from Starfleet command telling him his new mission (to explore the Alpha Quadrant), the final scene will be him setting a new course, sitting down and saying "Engage". That will be the end of the film and the new series will pick up from there.

The film will be awesome, the Borg will be controlled by a new hyper advanced drone that was being developed by the Borg by newly aquired technology from the race they assimilated who built the Dauntless in Voyager, this new drone was activated and took control of the collective when future Janeway killed the queen. The new Borg having assimilated the future Janeway learn about the founders and Dominion and launch a full scale attack on the Dominion, Odo contacts the Federation for help and information against the Borg, Starfleet send help in the form of a fleet of Defiants Sovereigns and a new class of ship to help fight and try and find a way to defeat the Borg. One scene sees a fleet of cubes come through the wormhole and attack DS9 but DS9 kicks serious ass. The uber starship Voyager is brought back into service with its advanced tech to try and push bac the Borg, the uber voyager manages to kick ass but the Borg adapt and destroy voyager. Eventually the Breen and Tholians are persuaded that the Borg will invade the entire Alpha Quadrant and the Breen share their energy dampening weapon tech and the the Tholians share their Tholian web technology the help fight the Borg, eventually the Borg are destroyed and the uber Borg drones pulls the Borg ships back to the Delta Qudrant.

I like your idea, Fire, but I just don't see them going back to the Berman shows. I think TNG's collapse, and Enterprise's lack of any real TV ratings, pretty much killed the golden goose, where it concerns all Bermanized Trek shows.

I would write the Trek myself ;) and i'd make it more appealing to a new audience, all Trek needs is to become something people recognise, in other words cut down on the treknobabble (I dont mean entirely) and alter the way people talk. That was the beauty of the last 3 seasons of DS9, it was far less liberal than any of the other shows and seasons and was more '21st century' like, not only that it appealed due to the comedy, how many other trek series was as funny? the ferengi episodes were especially funny.
Also we'd need to cut down on the repetitive storylines, no more 'stranded on planet with hallucinagenic plants' episodes which are stale and boreing, no more entire episodes of 'concentrate on character development only episodes', those kind of eps need to be a mix of character development and intense action. People nowadays want action, laughter and something they can understand, thats the way trek needs to go to survive, we dont have to destroy the foundation of what trek is about but it can do with some changes.

For my own personal satisfaction, I'd continue DS9. Of course, it would be a disaster in the ratings.
