You are the Captain 04

Logically, yes. But if they were going to do that then the 'other' ships would never exist in the first place. :p

Or, if there's a multiverse, the earliest iteration could travel into a timeline where the ship was destroyed. :p
Yeah, but ;) if it’s a multiverse, then each of those other iterations goes into a different universe, and so isn’t present to help the original ship fight the Orions in this one…

(We are of course playing with the silly at this point…)

I think I mentioned upthread that if you had a way to communicate across timelines and target specific ones, you could arrange for a bunch of the same ship to all meet up in the same timeline. :)

Stands to reason: the better captains don’t believe in the no-win scenario.

I get it, but the point of the game is to present a morally or ethically challenging decision and see the responses to the choice given, not to come up with every alternative way under the sun to dodge the conundrum presented.

Maybe, but you realize that’s generally not what they do on Star Trek, right? So far, you haven’t presented situations such as with Gary Mitchell or Charlie Evans, where there really are only bad options. You’re presenting Kobayashi Maru situations where there’s clearly supposed to be only two options… but if you do that, of course people are going to try to Kirk it! That’s exactly what a captain should do! So I’d suggest presenting situations where coming up with other options really would be unlikely. (And yes, given onscreen capabilities, that may be a challenge.)

I've only posted this one; the ones prior were posted by someone else. I thought I'd present a scenario since they stopped doing it on a weekly basis. I am hereby passing the baton on this concept after one attempt. ;)

Maybe we should be trying to Esteban or Styles them instead... ;p

Your conundrum as captain: Walk away, or engage and destroy the Orions (against your standing orders) in order to preserve the aliens which you have unwittingly led the Orions to? You've already tried to talk them into leaving, and failed.
Going by the stated timeline of events? Hostilities were already initiated by the Orions, and even if that were not the case 'in defense' also includes defending those who cannot defend themselves, which in this instance includes the colonists in cryo.

As diplomacy has been tried and failed with the Orions I would hail them and explain that they either leave, or they will be fired upon for heir prior aggression and clear current intent.

Assuming I survive the engagement I would detail everything in ship's log as well as personal logs and ensure my first officer is ready and capable of assuming command should i be stripped of command en route to friendly territory.

Haven't seen a new one in a while, so here you go:

You are the captain of an early UESPA exploration ship, pre-Federation. You've had encounters with the Orions previously, where they have attempted piracy and hijinks against you and your crew.

Your standing orders are to NEVER initiate hostilities with foreign powers, although you are allowed the right of self-defense.

You discover an alien starship orbiting the moon of a gas giant. The crew has been in suspended animation for 20,000 years as they attempt to terraform the moon by stages so that they can eventually emerge from their long sleep and settle it. Your intent is to make a passive study of the aliens and their vessel, and then depart and leave them in peace to continue their project, which will extended millenia into the future.

An Orion privateer that was shadowing you has now discovered the alien vessel due, indirectly, to your investigation. They are interested in the cryogenic suspension technology the aliens have, which is very advanced. It is clear that as soon as you depart, they will scavenge the alien ship for the tech, probably killing the crew in the process, or perhaps trying to revive them and sell them either as livestock or into slavery.

Your conundrum as captain: Walk away, or engage and destroy the Orions (against your standing orders) in order to preserve the aliens which you have unwittingly led the Orions to? You've already tried to talk them into leaving, and failed.

Side note: This is based on one of my fan-fics, The Long Sleep, available in that forum.
I'd say both. Walk away, but then make a big fuzz, about a couple of my officers having stolen one of my shuttles to save the aliens. Then the crew gets something akin to the "Seaman Hornsby"-treatment, being officially chewed out, but privately recommended, while I shrug at the orions: "See, my hands are tied here. Can't do anything. But you're getting something of value. Do you play 3d-chess?"
