Yo, Ro speaks out about DS9 etc etc etc

“I guess I was sort of stubborn and defiant right out of the gate,” she said. “I just knew I was too young to do one thing for seven years. I think, like most actors, I want to be challenged. The most important thing to me is I just want to be scared when I go to work."

That must be why she looks and acts extremely spaced-out in her final appearances on TNG. I never could figure out what the heck was wrong with her in those episodes...I wasn't even sure it was the same actress when I first watched those or if she was high on drugs while they were filming or what.

Anyhow, she would have been challenged o'plenty as Kira. I guess she thought DS9 would be another show with no character development like TNG was, which I suppose is a reasonable expectation at the time she made it given that she didn't know what they were going to do with DS9. Nonetheless, since hindsight is 20/20, the Kira role certainly would have been the most-developed and challenging character that she ever had the chance to play in her career.

I suppose this is also why they went with an actress who was a decade older than her character, too. Someone who could handle the young and ambitious arc of someone in their 20s, but someone with the experience and foresight in their 30s. It seems that if Forbes had few more years under her belt, she would've been more open to the role (actors want challenge, but actors also want steady gigs, too!). Forbes may have some regrets about not taking the role, but it's nice to see that she doesn't hold a grudge, either. If anything, she seems to take it as a learning experience.

All in all, Forbes will always be a friend to Trek in my book :)

The thing is that she would've been playing Kira she'd be playing Ro and Ro had a different backround than Kira, ther's no telling what they would've done with Ro as apposed to Kira.

Ro wouldn't have worked as well as Kira. Kira was a Bajoran through and through, with no allegiance to Starfleet and a history with the resistence. She was the perfect counterpart to Sisko. The two characters embodied the larger conflict of the series, indeed defined the conflict of the series.

Ro would have been a Bajoran starfleet officer. Her motivation would have been for everyone to come together. Kira's motivation is to get Bajor everything she can. There's a richer source of conflict with Kira. I liked Ro on TNG, but she wouldn't have worked on DS9, not in the role the producers wanted at least.

I think this was only realized after the fact that Ro would be unavailable, however. I would think that had Forbes accepted, the writers would still try to write her as the counterpart to Sisko and then adapted what they need from there. They were able to make her a fine foil to Riker and then Picard.

Yeah, she would have been handled differently than Kira, but I also feel that what we like about Kira's character were extensions that couldn't have been realized just yet in the early planning stages, when Ro was considered to join the crew.

I for one would have liked to see Ro Laren on DS9

I'd only like to see her as a guest star. Certainly not if that meant that the character of Kira Nerys wouldn't have been created. I like Ro Laren, but I love Kira more and, much as I like Michelle Forbes as an actress, I am grateful to her for rejecting the DS9 role for that reason.

Besides, Michelle was cool on Homicide:LOTS, and she wouldn't have been on it if she was on DS9.

Ro makes for a great "what if" scenario regarding DS9, but since Kira Nerys ended up being one of my favorite characters ever I'm glad things worked out the way they did.

I really like what's been done with her in the DS9 Relaunch.

How do you know that?

:wtf: I believe he doesn't 'know' it so much as he believes it and is stating it as his opinion... on an internet Star Trek forum... cause thats what people usually do... on discussion forums... discuss... their opinions...

I like Kira as a character, I think the show worked very well with her in there. It would have been different with Ro, and I don't know if the different would have been good or bad.

Indeed.

For those who don't know, the post-finale DS9 novels bring Ro onto the station as Odo's replacement in the role of Chief of Station Security. She is given a rank in the Bajoran Militia.

She and Kira alternate between distinct friction - caused by Ro's secular philosophy versus Kira's powerful faith, as well as by Ro's own don't-belong-anywhere issues - and bonding as two outsiders from the Bajoran political mainstream.

When Bajor joins the Federation, Ro rejoins Starfleet (for the third time), although it is not without resitance from certain figures in the service.

Bingo, all of the episodes related to Kira being a member of the resistance would have been gone. Even Second Skin probably. It would have significantly changed the show.

A Mirror Ro Laren would have been interesting though.

Now that's something I'd like to see. :techman:
