Yet another hint that Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.

Re: More proof that Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.

I cannot help but feel you are soooooo right! Remake this, reinvent that-WTF? I own thousands of good scifi books, many that would make a great movie/show-do we have to redo what has already been done?

The entertainment industry is now more about industry than entertainment. This happened to Music years ago. It's not a surprise that it's happened to Hollyweird too.

It's an industry. It's always been an industry. Studios do not exist for the purpose of bettering and expanding culture, they exist to capitalize on the interests of the entertainment needs of populations. Indie studios do the same thing, they just cater to a different crowd. The industry tries to follow what people watch, and right now, people are watching remakes, adaptions and reinventions like never before it seems, so there is a higher density of that in the movie market. In the nineties, people flocked to mediocre action films. The industry can't be blamed for going with what people watch, if you are to blame anybody it should only be the consumer. The industry isn't bankrupt... so long as it keeps on doing its thing.

I think I laughed for about a minute straight as I read AICN's original post on this (and watching the clip on Youtube). This is so horrible I can't wait to see what is put together!

Hollywood starting going downhill after the 60s. I long for stars who could conceivably be held up alongside people such as Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. People who weren't just a pretty face.

Surely, there must be at least one or several film industries currently out there around the world that top the creative and quality output of most Hollywood films?

Sure, but I bet you it's still a commercial enterprise. I realize films can be made for art's sake, that's all fine and good, but we're in a consumerist society. People buy what they want, that drives the market, that's why Hollywood is pumping out these movies. Now, sure, it can go both ways. The industry can try to dictate to people what they want, shape their tastes a little, but I don't see that happening with movies very much. There was a huge Hollywood slump a few years ago, now we're seeing it fare a little better. Right now Hollywood is scrambling to produce what people want to get their asses back in the theater. Right now, that is crappy-to-decent-to-spectacular remakes and re-imaginings, with decent-to-spectacular actually making most of the money the past couple of years.

Edit: Sorry, I shouldn't say most. I mean of the top grossing films in the US or even Worldwide, I'd wager that most of them are remakes, sequels or adaptions.

MGM Films is in the process of re-acquiring the film rights to the Three Stooges from Warner Bros. Pictures, according to sources.
The new $45 million contemporary-day feature consists of four 20-minute shorts, the same as the slapstick pioneers' most common format in the 1920s and '30s. The first establishes the trio as seven-year-old castoffs who terrorize the nun-run orphanage that takes them in.

The Farrellys are attached to direct and produce along with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler, and a PG or PG-13 rating is being targeted.

A November 20th 2009 release date has been set, though no-one is yet attached to star. A country-wide search will be conducted to find someone to play Curly."

I'm sorry, the Three Stooges can NEVER be replaced.
