Yet Another Clip from Phase II's "Mind-Sifter"

We've put up yet another short (1:172) clip from our recent shoot of the episode "Mind-Sifter." It's a rough cut with rough sound and with, well, rough everything--so all the usual caveats about "works in progress" apply. Like the earlier clip, it gives you a sense of where the episode is headed.

Thanks for the second clip, whets my appetite even more. I am looking forward to the full episode.

Well, this is a reminder that any release of "Mind-Sifter" is still a long ways off: we've only shot about half of it so far. But in the meantime, we have three other episodes and one short vignette waiting in the wings.

In fact, look for the official release of our "No Win Scenario" Klingon vignette this weekend.

Just a question -- is it my imagination, or are the uniforms fitting the actors a little differently? I noticed it a lot in the other clip on Spock's gold tunic, but it seems to be happening on Kirk's tunic as well. Are you using a new material?

Yes, the uniforms are fitting a bit differently because we have new fabric for our costumes. A year or two ago we had several huge bolts of 1st and 2nd season-style velour material fabricated for us. So we’ve been phasing out (har har) our 3rd season-type double-knit material and we’re starting to use the velour. We started using the velour starting with our “Origins/The Protracted Man” episode. So that episode and the one to follow (“The Mind-Sifter”) use the velour. (“The Child” and “Kitumba” still have the double-knit material.)

Very perceptive. They are using a different material. There is some discussion of it on the Phase 2 board.

I'd love to get my hands on a little bit of the material so I could build some puppet-sized costumes. ;) Thanks for the info!

When does the Enterprise re-fit take place? The one that's close to the aborted Phase II TV series design?

I recall that move being nixed, as Phase II is now the only place to go to see new adventures of with the original ship.

But wasn't that always the truth? Phase II was always the only place to see new adventures of the original ship.

They still have the "sneak peak" of the refit Enterprise on the Phase II website:

Sneak Peak at the Phase II refit Enterprise

It says it's supposed to make its debut in "Enemy: Starfleet"

I think it's a good looking refit, I'm sorry to hear that they changed their minds about it.

Well, it wasn't always the case: the decision to phase in the old Phase II Enterprise came before the JJ Abrams movie came out. I think most people (including us at Phase II) were thinking that his Enterprise would be a faithful TOS Enterprise and would be another place to see the old Enterprise. When the movie came out and people started screaming about his Enterprise and were lamenting that the rebooted movie franchise wouldn't be using the TOS Enterprise, folks expressed a desire to have us keep the TOS style instead of switching to a different style ship--like JJ Abrams did. So we backpedaled on that decision.

After being severely damaged in "Blood and Fire" we see that the Enterprise is her usual self in "Enemy: Starfleet." We'll see it's her usual self in "The Child" and "Kitumba."

At this point, we probably won't do a Phase II refit before the TMP refit. But perhaps we'll see a sister ship of the Enterprise that got upgraded to a Phase II style ship.

At some point are you guys thinking of switching things into the refit era? I've been studying a lot of things about the TMP-TVH bridge set and if you ever decided to start building that version, I've solved a few of the construction issues while building my half-sized puppet set. I'll help anyway I can. Has anyone ever unearthed any construction plans (other than the fan-based stuff) for that set?

I nominate the Excalibur. It shouldn't be much of a problem towing what we left of her back to base and letting a refit crew go nuts.
