Yesterdays Enterprise alternate timeline?

Real world and budgetry reasons aside do you suppose the Enterprise D in Yesterdays Enterprise could've or should've been a different class of starship?

I mean when you look at, when the war with the Klingons started, the Galaxy class was still still at least 10 years away from being thought of, at least in the prime timeline anyway, and given the circumstances that type of design would never be given much thought anyway. I say that becuase even in the original timeline the Galaxy is pretty much a Starfleet cruise liner, it was designed to carry over 1000 Starfleet and civilian personnel and wasn't really meant for great battles. I know that the Enterprise, and a few Galaxy's, has seen a few battles, like the Borg and the Dominion war for example, but tbh I don't see a need for a ship that size, and in that design, to be used in constant warfare.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Galaxy class but not for this alternate timeline. It would've been better, I think, had they used a similar, slightly more, beefier version and still get away with calling it a Galaxy class Battleship.

What do you think, are you happy with the regular Enterprise D design being used in the alternate timeline or could they have used a diffrerent design?

The Galaxy class not thought of until the mid-2350s? When did they say that on TNG?

I don't give a shit about the TNG tech manual ;)

Though the writers and fx team never utilized it properly, the ship as designed was Covered in firepower. No blind spots there. And, at that size, if it can carry 1000 in spacious luxury, imagine how many more Troops it can carry in cramped quarters. And with all the transporter arrays it has, they could really swarm a planet locale. It's like a heavily-armed troop carrier, as opposed to most troop carriers needing escort vessels for protection.

And a sensor array designed for exploration should serve just as well in combat operations

If they're not on a misson moving troops and need more maneuverability, I suppose they could always leave the saucer section parked at a starbase. Way back in S1's Heart Of Glory, I recall Worf saying, "Yes, when relieved of her bulk, the Enterprise becomes an exceptional weapon."

If only they'd pack the ship with more engineers though... So the phase inducers might be kept online in a fight! Haha - I hated that routine where Geordi goes and opens up a wall panel, takes a look for a moment and declares the ship lost. I rarely ever got a sense of there being real teams of engineers jumping to it when it came to damage control. 2-3 guys and a few panels. Here's comes the fog, let's close the doors and run. How about some environmental suits for hairy situations? For a future show or movie, I'd like to see some stock footage created to show engineers scrambling with their toolboxes and going to work in far- flung, purely-mechanical areas of the ship. A damage control PARTY!

In the mirror universe novel by Diane Duane (title escapes me - Dark Mirror?), there was a much larger, meaner galaxy class vessel that sounded intriguing (main engineering was like walking into a cathedral) and would've been neat to see if they'd let TNG tackle a Mirror, Mirror sequel first.
