Yesterday...

Whereas I was left feeling "But...why?" Eh, it seems rather pointless.

If I want a full-blown celebration of The Beatles and their music catalog, I'll watch Across the Universe again.

Yep.
And the whole time I kept thinking, a world that never had the Beatles in it would be SO different musically. Especially pop and rock. Would Coldplay even exist as they are without the Beatles? What replaced the Beatles? The Stones? Herman's Hermits?

I know I'm over thinking it, but, I'm a big Beatles fan, ideally someone this movie is targeting and I'm not... interested.

If that's all it is, then it would probably blow, yeah.

For it to work for me, there has to be something going on with the premise about there being this guy who everybody thinks is responsible the songs. That there is something there is hinted at with the two pairs of feet. But then again, it could be a big nothing.

The trailer is brilliant.

Of course, Boyle cheats - having the Beatles as a soundtrack will make just about anyone feel strongly while they watch a film.

What grabs me immediately is the central character's dilemma - I've read a lot of versions of this story; writers - for some reason - love it ;). John Gardner did a memorable version of it as a novella, built around two fictional writers. Gregory Benford did a science fiction short story in 1975 which, interestingly enough, also used the Beatles as the "source artists" - but in that case, it was about a guy just impersonating Lennon some decades in the future, rather than presenting Lennon's work as his own.

This doesn't look like a movie with a huge budget, which is good - because the trailer itself already has too much story for it to survive for more than a week or so in the multiplexes.

I actually just watched Across the Universe for the second time a week or two ago. Love that movie, it's one of my favorite movie musicals.

As long as the movie keeps the focus away from 'a world without the Beatles' and more on this guy who is faking writing all of the Beatles' songs, I think this could be fun. I don't think there is a songwriter alive who has not fantasized some variation of this movies' premise.

And as an aside, if the Beatles had never existed, technically, you could also erase progressive rock from existence, as well as a myriad of other artists. Poor Billy Joel really might be making his living on The Downeaster Alexa.

This type of story isn't anything new. And you can probably figure out how it will turn out. Musician is getting rich and famous off Beatles songs but they're not his own songs so the success isn't even about him. To win back the woman he loves, he'll write an original song for her, then wake up from his coma and realize what's really important to him.

Looks interesting. Though, knowing my memory, I'll have completely forgotten about it well before June.

So, the trailer drops the pivotal "These two guys say they wrote the songs" pretty heavily. What are the alternatives if that's not what it suggests?

BTW, David Lautman is credited at IMDB as playing "Ringo Starr" in the movie.

It looks like a fun movie but nothing groundbreaking. With the baby coming before the movie is released, it'll probably be a rental.

As a huge Beatles fan, I am torn between my desire to see an actual biopic about the Fab Four and knowing that whoever does it will completely fuck it up.
