Work in progress to feature Rand in a few additional episodes. One think I have learned that TOS cameras wobbled a lot and introducing even small background features is very challenging.

This is an attempt to give her a few scenes in a Piece of the Action, using colourised footage from the Outer Limits episode - Controlled Experiment. Equalising the colours will be a very time-consuming image-by-image process but this is the rough draft using Wav2lip and Deepface to give he a couple of onscreen lines.

And another scene for Tholian Web.

Despite it being a fascinating endeavour, and a fan film project, isn't adding dead actors to new (or old) productions with CGI or AI part of why the Hollywood actors have been striking? Not criticising, but I do feel an uneasiness about such projects now (that I didn't really think too much about before), especially when the actors and writers have been striking for so long in order to protect their future earnings, and the future of the industry.

The recent exciting work with body doubles and CGI enhancements with a TMP-era Spock and Yeoman Colt, shown on the Roddenberry website, were done with the agreement by Nimoy's estate and Laurel Goodwin (before she passed away).

Yes, I am a bit wary, which is why you will note these additional appearances are very brief, largely just snipping existing footage and pasting it in another episode, and I have used only two deepfaked scenes to say two lines. I believe that the AI debate is more concerned with people using images inappropriately (porn, political messaging, scam adverts, and/or profiting from the actors' images) and it being a slippery slope. The original actors never got residuals for any of these old appearances though, so I don't feel like I am doing Grace a disservice.

Obviously, your mileage may vary.

After SNW, I am quite comfortable (with slight reservations such as Scotty being a bit young) with them recasting as a way to develop these old characters but if a deal can be done with the actors' estates, that would be so lovely. The Roddenberry Vault seems to be very respectful of the material and the actors.

I'm also conscious that Majel Barrett's voice has not been re-used, despite fan support and her open willingness for it to be so. I am not sure why this wasn't embraced by the makers of the new shows but it demonstrates that a lot goes on behind the scenes and the issue isn't at all straightforward.

Overall, my motivation is to do a little bit to tweak the skewed female dynamic of TOS, to demostrate that Rand had wasted potential as a main character, and most of all, as an homage to the actress who had great affection for her fans. I truly hope that I don't offend anyone!

Interesting as a fan editing project, but I don't see that these additions really add anything to the episodes in question.

Yes they add nothing other than the presence of a missing character. That said, the edit of A Piece of the Action changes the story a bit but I still have a lot of colour correction to do on those parts.

It has been very interesting to learn what modern photo editing suites can do.

If you haven't already, you should check out FanEdit.org and OriginalTrilogy.com. Both are fan editing sites and you can probably get a shit-ton of tips, software advice, and just plain tribal knowledge on this sort of stuff. A LOT of fan edit projects involve simple color corrections. ( I say 'simple' without knowing the firs thing about it... :p )

I don't think I could ever hope to be as good as those guys - both my eyesight and hearing are quite poor. I'm aiming for something I can watch at home without embarrassment.

The auto-colourisation of old footage seems to be very uneven when any objects move fast. I used De-oldify which was fairly stable but with muted colours. I'm now just using Photoshop to colour correct and brighten up Grace's scenes. It looks ok on the laptop but Not sure how it will look on a TV. I am hoping that blending the layers will help me get it to the point where it isn't too jarring when I flip backwards and forwards to the original episode.

Yeah, my understanding is she even made a large nunber of recordings so they could use her voice later. As you mentioned, even with the 110% support amongst all parties (estate, fans, etc.) to use her, the production obviously decided against it, I sort of wonder if they ultimately considered it a slippery slope they didn't want to start going down.

Majel's voice was used to read new audio in the Roddenberry Archive site with those 3D bridge tours.

But yeah, it hasn't been used in any TV shows/movies yet.

Gawd, I would hope Ran would be smart enough not to look right down the barrel of a weapon she just fired, thinking it was locked and loaded. That just gave me a bad moment, seeing anyone do it, even in a TV show. ( 0:45 in the vid)

Lol! I think she skipped the crash course in firearms use from Sulu before beaming down. She spent all her briefing learning to speak like a ganster's moll... Badly .

She has her booger hook on the bang stick when she does it, too!

A fascinating glimpse of the future.

Someday, any individual will be able to effortlessly convert old episodes into holonovels and create new ones using old faces and voices.

Final part of Tholian Web.

I think if she appeared in the episode Mirror Mirror. That would have been great. They could have wrote her in for one episode, one of the best episodes

There were definitely a few episodes where she could have added a lot as a guest character. It's very difficult to do much more than a background cameo in most cases though!

Experimented with showing Rand enter the bridge. It's quite tricky because Lenore Karidian blocks part of her in the original footage. Not much I can do once she's there though!
