Anyway, I should probably give myself a proper introduction, seeing as I simply launched into a debate about STD last time. Hi!!! I'm Crazy Minh, a uni student from Sydney, Australia. I've been a big fan of Trek for many years, having watched Voyager and the last few seasons of DS9 as a kid. I watched enterprise too, and did like it, although I do agree it was a...mildly irritating incarnation of Star Trek. I'm the sort of fan who obsessively watches episodes, and then gets angry when STD fucks up references and introduces plot and story elements that break the continuity. A lot. So, I've already stated my opinion of STD in another thread, so I'll keep that out of the way

I hope that after using this site initially to vent (which I apologise profoundly for), I can become a productive member of the community. I've already established myself as a well-liked and respected member of the community on other forums, so I hope I can end up doing the same here. Although that initial thread is going to put something of a black mark on my reputation here. I can tell you that I am in no way a troll. I can be very extreme with some of my opinions, but then again: who isn't??? Roddenberry was extremely left-wing in his views, and the Federation is the exemplar of utopian left-wing Technocratic Democracy. So, yeah. Sorry about my initial rant, and apologies if I put this in the wrong thread. I couldn't find a newbie introduction zone like there is on other forums.

If you're that sensitive to continuity problems, I'm guessing you really should back out of Star Trek. Continuity has been an issue long before Disco was ever on the scene.

Yep! I mean, it was originally me just trying to vent (already done that pretty much everywhere I could, kinda sad actually), but it was fun. It also derailed so hard that it caused a explosion of madness. But, insanity is simply just good fun, am I right???

I'm aware of this. But then again, it's not just the continuity. I know there are continuity problems. Any long-running series that has been going for more than 50 years with many generations of writers will have problems. The main issue is that STD doesn't FEEL like Star Trek. It feels more like BSG (not saying that's a bad thing- I love BSG), in that it's
- Grimdark
- Depressing
- Emo
- Edgy
and not the utopian vision of the future that predicted a world where there is hope for the future. In a time where science fiction (our imaginings of possible futures) show only ones where we are dying, it is a terrible way to inspire people to do better and to improve themselves the way Star Trek did when I was growing up, being bullied for being a total geek, and looking for a future where that wasn't the way things worked. Star Trek gave me hope, and actually prevented me from going down a alley of thought that probably would have resulted in my suicide. So, yeah. It's not the canon that's the problem. It is how the new Trek feels. Dark, actiony trek should only stay in the reboots.

Bullying has always been present in Star Trek. Spock was bullied by other Vulcans in Yesteryear. Kirk was bullied by Finnegan in Shore Leave.

Sadly bullies will always exist. I've learned that the best way to deal with them is throw whatever they say right back in their face. Or if they threaten you, call their bluff, and tell them to do it. They'll push around a pushover, but if they think you'll push back, they'll move on to someone else.

I see where you're coming from now. Though, I wouldn't exactly call Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Beyond dark. Star Trek Into Darkness, well, it's in the title, but I never thought it felt dark per se so much as it was just a PG-13 action flick, with some (melo)drama to it, that went over the top in the second half.

Tonally, DSC is picking up where DS9 left off. Ron Moore was major part of DS9 so, when he went to BSG, he took things further than he ever could've with Star Trek... so it makes sense that DSC would progress along lines that more closely resemble BSG if DS9 is the starting point. Different people have different tastes, but this is one of the reasons why I like Discovery so much.

Season 2 is going to be a lighter tone now that the war is over.

Season 1 was about going from the dark to to the light.
